    Default How to breathe

You see fighters like Hatton, Calzaghe, Jones Jr

Going the distance seems to not be that big of a deal for em, which of course points to the road work. But what about breathing? I'm guessing there's a certain way to breathe that allows people like Jfat to last 12 rounds (even though he fights for a minute of every round, he still lasts the full 12). Is it exhaling when you throw, holding your breath while you flury?

    Thx in advance

Its not so much breathing with Toney, he knows how to work just enough to steal a round and how to get relativly safe whilst not exerting himself.

The reason you exhale whilst throwing is a different thing, it's all about energy and your intercostal muscles.

You learn when to rest and how to rest effectivly, you need to know when to loosen and tense up, being tense when you don't need to be burns energy for no good reason.

James Toney can go 12 rounds because of experience (that alone won't save you though... as you would of saw with Rahman...) its the same with Hatton and Calzaghe but its more to do with them being extremely well conditioned (esspecially in Hatton's case, though I think his team didn't move him up to Welter as well as they could have)

The key is learning to control your breathing , in between rounds . For instance. Don’t let your self start panting uncontrollably like a dog, make your self hold the breath, then exhale, then breath deep, and hold.. You be in control, not the other way around, when you master this you will be fine,. Its some what of an art form. . You want to learn to exhale when throwing punches no only to maximize you force ,but also to prevent you from having the wind knocked out of you ,when you get return fire, which usually comes at the same time or immediately after you let your punches go. . Nothing worse then breathing in while getting hit in the body. Good luck!

pray to god some one doesn't slip your shot and hit you in the stomach then... you also throw more explosive combos and throw harder shots when the abdominen and intercostals are contracted... pump your abs out and try to take a deep breath, smooth and comfortable? thought not :P

in totally non scientific terms it helps you excert force from your body, that why us boxers make some stupid noises... :P

You don't need oxygen during punching, just after... thats why fighters tie each other up, move in and out of range etc to breath.

Ill give you a very good tip as regards breathing. Dont box with the chin more than 15% down it stops your chest from working by up to 50%. It stops the airways from working, its very rare yuoll see a world class fighter boxing that way. Ive never under stood why coaches tell boxers to do it. From that position you can see the floor, and thats where youre going to finnish up. Plus the eyes work primarily of oxygen, so its going to effect eyesight. Plus the muscle neurons in the back and shoulders are getting the wrong response for speed of movement, because they already have a response.

thx scrap, had not a clue

As to why coaches (atleast from what instruction I've received) tell you me to keep the chin down (further than 15 percent), is to keep the head from taking the full force of the punch. So basically if your chin is up and they throw a straight shot the neck will be jolted all the way back then the equilibrium gets off balance. Will definately keep this is in mind though.

One of the biggest things in those guys favor is you never see them get worked up. They usually stay relaxed the whole time...Watch Kassim Ouma. Even when flurryiong he doesn't change his tempo...It keeps the body at an even rate....like you said exhale when you punch but that is mostly when you are throwing big shots...Just breath at an even pace....NEVER HOLD YOUR BREATH....Your body uses up the oxygen quicker because you are exerting yourself...then your body need more oxygen quickly to balance itself out to make up for the carbons that were held in also....this is how fighters get winded quickly....and of course your cardio workouts should be included in your workouts

Boxing is about not getting hit,Ifyou drop your chin numerous things biomechanicaly happen and emotionly. by dropping the chin youre waiting to get hit and your head is 6 inch nearer his glove making it easier as a target. By dropping the chin, your spine and shoulders cant react as qiuckly you put pressure on the lower back, which in turn restricts the groin and your abductor muscles. In short you restrict movement, which is restriction of mobility to evade punches. Which in turn causes panic to the senses, because they are getting the wrong signals, to perform as nature intended. Tight shoulders ,and hips and being off balance isnt the best way to start throwing punches. As Ive said before Oral balance and posture is the secret of reaction and speed. In the end all things being equal speed in correct form is the winner. plus put your elbows on your chest with your hands on your chin pulled back okay, comfortable, now drop the chin onto the chest.
