Default New gloves and sore hands

    Hey all,
New poster here. I’ve done a search, but can’t find an answer to my exact dilemma.

I’m pretty new to boxing and have been training for about 6 months. Until now I’ve been sharing a pair of training gloves with someone else at the gym. About a month ago I bought a pair of 16oz gloves to train with. The last 4 times I’ve used them they have left the ring finger of my right have quite sore. It’s mostly sore in the fleshy part of that finger, between the knuckle and first joint of the finger on the palm side of the hand. I have talked to my coach and made sure I’m punching correctly, I have tried wrapping my hand tighter and looser and also tried making a tighter or looser fist with my hand. I’ve also had my hand x-rayed, they couldn’t find anything.

The pain usually starts around the end of a workout and could be due to the depreciation of technique as I get worn out. However, this has never happened with the old gloves I used.
I have waited a week and my finger is feeling better, I am thinking of going back to the gloves I used to use and see if that changes anything. If that doesn’t work I am thinking to add some sponges to my wraps and see how it helps.

Has anyone else had a set of new gloves make their hard hurt in this way?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: I should add that it mostly seems to happen during mitt session, not heavy bag.

Thanks. I'll keep with the new gloves for a few more weeks and try focus on my technique and see how it goes from there.

A number of things could be happening here.

    You're punching too hard.
You have brittle bones like Calzaghe.
You're a girl and the pain isn't actually that bad.
    You're punching wrong.
    All of the above.

To be fair though mate, with 16oz gloves I'd feel comfortable enough to punch a brick wall without hurting my hand.

Try lowering to 12oz and not punching so hard, punch soft and throw more.
    You say tomato,
    ‘n I say …… it correctly.

I've bolded the most likely culprit .

So this morning I went to my gym, had a pad session and left with very little to no pain.

The two things that were different:
Firstly, I added a bit of sponge to my wraps and secondly I had someone new holding the pads. I was throwing harder punches then I have for 3 weeks and all felt good.
The new pad holder was very good in giving advice on my technique and I think was the biggest difference for today. I was definitely more conscious of my technique today too, so that might've helped.

Anyway, I have another session tomorrow and I'll see how it goes.

EDIT:Also, thanks to everyone for their advice.

Hey everyone, I know this is dragging this topic up from the depths of hell, but, just thought I’d provide an updated (if anyone cares ).

So, I don’t get the pain at all anymore! Yay!
It came down to a couple of things. Firstly, my technique would get worse as my arms got tired and I would start hitting with the ring and pinky knuckles. The tiredness was probably due to not being used to 16 oz gloves.
Secondly, I was trying to hold a fist the WHOLE time with my right and not relaxing it when not throwing a punch . Seems a silly thing to do really; I was doing it subconsciously and sometimes still have to remind myself not to. I’ve also been working on my grip strength, which has helped as well.

Again, thanks to those that commented and helped out. I’ll go back to lurking and soaking in the info.

Don't read to much into it. It certainly wont be the last time it happens if you carry on. Gloves fit different like shoes or skates and just like them need to be broken in. Not as much with the synthetic materials but enough. Its not happening on the bag so its when you are able to follow through to a degree.

What I'd try is not wrapping for the mitt work, taking something off your shots and getting a feel for the gloves. Sweat in them a bit and get a real feel. Wear them in a bit. Try a new pair of a different brand is something else you might try if available with another club member.

    Good luck.

    Thanks for replying.

I figured that some of the pain could’ve been needing to wear them in a bit.
I did take it easy for a little bit and haven’t had the pain for a while now.

I’ve been finding when I focus on how I’m hitting (instead of how hard) and make sure I relax my right hand when not punching I don’t have any issues.
