Re: Andre Ward getting the Rigo treatment from HBO
Not for nothing but I can see their point. They pay fees, and the costs of televising. They demand product and payoff for their investment. I could be biased though. I'm not a fan of ward. Rigo, i'm on the fence about. Truth be told, if ward was doing to everyone what he did to Dawson, then this wouldn't be an issue. If Rigo didn't spend so much time on his bike, this wouldn't be an issue either. Styles make fights, but knockouts and action make money. HBO is not in it to appeal to the the boxing purists, they're in it to make money. Now take that for what its worth, but a fighter like Floyd realized that as his legs started to go, he could get on his bike and and try to pick apart a fighters or he could start fighting out of the center of the ring and use his defense prowess to walk guys down, his speed to get off first and his feints to dictate his opponents offense by baiting them into throwing punches and countering. Its not ring generalship, defense or footwork that HBO is against. Its a passive approach and the wait and see mentality that has them closing their wallet. After the GBP fighters jumped ship and went to showtime, HBO is short on patience for primadonnas who's first priority is "what they deserve". Sucks, but it is what it is.
They want your @$$ beat because upsets make news. News brings about excitement, excitement brings about ratings. The objective is to bring you up to the tower and tear your @$$ down. And if you don't believe that, you're crazy.
