    Default Kevin Rooney

Anyone know why Mike Tyson was his only good fighter He was apparently a good trainer, at least as good as Teddy Atlas he just never got anyone as talented as a Michael Moorer or Michael Grant.

I know Rooney had some problems with alcohol, maybe that deterred people from signing up with him?

Will he make a comeback as a top rate trainer or will he flounder with such journeymen as Leonard Pierre 18-2, Jay Krupp 9-1, and Thomas Hayes 25-1

Honestly I think getting a good fighter at Welterweight or thereabouts would be good for him.

Also Light heavyweight and 168 are shallow right now perhaps he can get a good prospect in there.

The problem is, that his current crop of guys have NO CHINS

He's decent, but if I was a top tier fighter looking for a trainer such as Jermain Taylor, Paul Williams, or Juan Diaz he would not be on top of my list of the elite

But wouldn't that also depend on your body type and fighting style?

For example Rocky Juarez probably wouldn't want Buddy McGirt as a trainer

That's a good point, but Juarez is not an elite fighter, if you are an up and coming boxer with a load of potential and predicted to be an elite fighter you only want to hire the best no matter what you fighting style is, take the Steward-Taylor connection, Manny has taught all kind of styles so Jermain was comfortable with that.

Jermain fit the style that Manny teaches. Tall fighters, good jab, power in the right cross.

    Hearns
    McClellan
    Lewis
    Wladimir
    McCall
    etc

Rooney has a style good for short guys or guys with short arms and fast hands. I think these guys would be good for him:

    Joe Mesi
    Sultan Ibragimov
    Lamon Brewster
    Jeff Lacy
Ricky Hatton (not that he needs a change but his style is condusive to Rooney's training)
    Miguel Cotto (same as above)

    And so on

right on.....If the fighter doesn't match the style they will never reach the top...plus Elite fighters are few and even farther between......and chins are not created....
It feels good to be back home.

Rooney had fighters here and there. He trained Pazienza for years after Duva, many of Pazienza's post accident(broken neck) fights. Rooney trained Omar Sheika in the early days and Jeremy Williams, also in the early days. Funny, Rooney Trained Williams when Williams ko'd undefeated Dannell Nicholson in 2. Not long after Williams dropped Rooney because he thought Rooney's style was wrong for him. Soon after Williams was manhandled by Larry Donald. I guess has new trainer wanted him to box on the outside with Donald as opposed to Rooney's inside fighting style. Opps

because hes a full believer in the dmato sytem(peekaboo style) and its very rare for a fighter to excell in that style of fighting, dmato only really had one fighter that was awsome(tyson).torres and patterson were never more than a spark, tyson was an inferno. plus he lives in remote cattskill not many good fighters go through there

Rooney trained the Pazmanian Devil , also has a heavyweight fights out of ChicagoThomas Hayes . Kevin is a good trainer and good people. He knew how to keep Tyson active and fighting every 3 4 months. activity was Tyson best asset. it kept him sharp and focused, he went to shit when they fired Rooney because Tyson started fighting once maybe twice a year. and thus he got into trouble and would balloon up to 265-270 in between fights and spend training camp trying to get in condition rather then working on technique. thus he would look flat. and eventually turned into what he is today a 2-3 round fighter.

he didnt even really train tyson so much as he just Inherited tyson

hes a very good trainer and has trained many professionals and made money doing it ..they just never became world champions
also he doesnt have alot of spark in his ass like many great trainers ...hes a tough trainer who likes to keep his fighters in shape but he isnt very inspiring
