For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.

That's the way it is, not the way it ends
There is a group trying to push Smells Like Teen Spirit to number one... this makes a bigger joke of it (I've posted several times arguing that all they're doing is filling Love's pockets).
Courtney Love - plastic, X Factor - real.
For what it's worth I agree, love is trash... but so is the X Factor.... but a music lover only blaming Courtney Love for allowing the X Factor to bastardise yet more good music would be the same as a vegetarian hating slaughter houses but thinking butchers were OK.

Courtney Love is rancid, but so was Cobain. Nirvana are a group I have never got into and that is because I have taste. They just don't have any tunes and their heavier stuff is just banal. Smashing Pumpkins were a much better band (then).

You can't really compete Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins against each other. Totally different sound/bands/ethic
Heart Shaped Box brings back some great memories (those were the days.. ahhh)

Life is rancid we walk through life slowly decaying and like it or not are all blessed with taste. Taste that for most people allows them to savour the sour and the sweet, cheese that has ripened, grape juice that has fermented. Tunes that are prescribed as cool by the cognoscenti are banal, the avoidance of the obvious is ignorance in the face of beauty, a willingness to dismiss material due to it's density is an unoriginal approach. Saying that Nirvana don't have any tunes is akin to dismissing Van Gogh because his brush strokes are too obvious, he uses too much yellow and everyone knows he ended up with one ear and painted sunflowers.
The Smashing Pumpkins, while the creators of several good albums, are one of the most pretentious and indulgent bands in music history. They should have been a 70's stadium rock band. There is one track on Siamese Dream that has something like 37 different guitar tracks.
Nirvana created music that was far more pure, less contrived, and simply better IMO. Of course, it all boils down to personal taste.
Yes, saying that Nirvana weren't good because they didn't have tunes was a bit off. Many of my favourite albums are devoid of tunes, but I think they are great. I think I posted that previous post in one of my otherworldly states of intoxication.
Nirvana were/are definitely a band I have never got into though. Nevermind is an extremely overrated album IMO. In Utero is at times interesting in terms of production and sound, but I just don't think the songwriting is particularly good and lyrically it doesn't speak to me.
It is a matter of taste like CFH says and there is just something about Nirvana that didn't touch me. I'm just one mans opinion at the end of the day.
I think Smashing Pumpkins were on my mind because of the new reissues, but I can't be sure.
I like Smashing Pumpkins a lot. Siamese Dream is a solid alternative rock album. At times it is too indulgent, but there are strong songs on it. Melon Collie is my favourite album of theirs. It is extremely versatile and Corgan shows a lot of craft in his writing.
I like pretension in rock music and like artists who are willing to indulge themselves by producing something a bit different. I think at times Billy Corgan did that with a lot of aplomb. Cobain was much more a one trick pony for me.
