Default I was just scrolling back and

I was just scrolling back beyond the boards, and I saw a poll that said something like "Who has a Gayer nickname" Pernell Whitaker or Floyd Mayweather Jr.

And it inspired me to, make this poll, who would win between those two, if they where to meet in the ring.

    FMJR. or PW

    Nice question Purist.

While I believe that PBF is one of the best around right now, I think that Pernell is one of the top four lightweights ever and would win a fight for the purists, Purist!

    Here's my list.
    1 - Roberto Duran
    2 - Benny Leonard
    3 - Joe Gans
    4 - Pernell Whitaker

There's no 5th place as too many are jockeying for that spot. Canzoneri, Armstrong (more fights at welter but weighed at lightweight mainly), Carter, Buchanan (without Duran he could have reigned longer), Arguello & Chavez all have a shout.

I loved Whitaker, especially when you factor in what he could accomplish hungover.

That honestly isn't meant to be a slam.

I know how difficult my day can be if I've been roped into having too many "social obligaitions" the night before.
Imagine going to work & getting your dough-head beat on by prizefighters.

Here you go Purist. His life after boxing. Good to see he kept himself busy and out of mischief, eh!

I'll let you do the math as I am dozier than usual today...

1997: Whitaker tests positive for cocaine after an October bout with Andrei Pestraiev, changing a victory into a no-contest.

1998: Whitaker arrested twice for reckless driving in Virginia Beach, gets suspended sentences on both counts. He also tests positive for cocaine, which eliminates bout with Ike Quartey.

1999: Whitaker arrested, pleads guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol.

August 9, 2001: Whitaker, after pleading guilty to speeding and driving without a valid license, is sentenced to four days in the Virginia Beach jail. Deputies processing him find cocaine on his person and he is charged with possession of a controlled substance.

January, 2002: Whitaker pleads guilty to cocaine possession, but is given first offender status and a year’s probation in lieu of a prison sentence, which carries a maximum of 10 years.

August 2002: Given a four-year suspended sentence with probation of one year.

January 2002: Whitaker turns himself into police

March 13, 2002: Whitaker taken to hospital after apparent cocaine overdose.

March 28, 2002: Whitaker arrested and charged with contempt of court, for violating terms of his probation.

May 2, 2002: Whitaker sentenced in Virginia Beach, Va., 30 days of a six-month jail term for third reckless driving conviction.

February 14, 2003: Whitaker was held without bond in Virginia Beach after being charged for driving under the influence. He refuses to take a breathalyzer test. A hearing is scheduled March 11.

March 11. 2003: Whitaker receives a 27-month prison sentence on his second DUI conviction (his first was in 1999) after judge.

As you can see when he fought Trinidad, he was broke and hadn't trained more than a week and a half because he had been in a rehab only 2-3 weeks before that fight in NY. He surprised his own corner by lasting the entire 12 rounds.
