    Default intimidated during sparring!

The last 2 times Ive sparred it has been with a much better fighter. I start off strong, trying to be offensive and attaking and then he dishes out some pain and I lose all confidence and end up backing up and not attaking for the rest of the round. Its like I know I cant beat the guy so I just try to survive ! I guess its just primitive fear taking over....

Im not asking for a gameplan or strategy, its more about the mental side. Like feeling intimidated, fear, pain etc...
Like how to get through it. Should I just keep sparring with him until I'm not getting beaten as badly? lol
    will this pass with experience?

Anyone else ever experience this or am I just a wuss

Keep on doing your training regime and as you learn the trade you will develope more confidence.
Try to stay focused and ask advice off the trainer on duty.
Take it one step at a time.
    You know, practice makes perfect.
I remember before my first fight i puked my guts out from shear fear.
But as i grew more confident i learned to harness the fear and make it work for me instead of against me.
Don't think your weak or something. Just remember, you're still learning

    Thats just it mate..Its experiance..

Eventually you'll get confidence and you wont mind getting hit..
just be sure to keep your hands up and bring em right back after throwing..
Dont worry about missing.. Just get right in there and want to fight..You gota think who cares and take some to give some..dont go wild ..Throw your shots properly and try different combinations and once you have a good session and you think yeah i did alright today and you get a bit proud..Thats when you'll start to enjoy yourself a little more and loosen up..
As of right now your getting used to sparring..Once your used to it is when you get to try new stuff and learn from sparring ..
    Good luck

I was told many years ago that sparring should benefit the person with the least skill. If you're being tuned up by someone who is better than you your trainer should step in and either stop the session or put you in with someone else who is less aggressive. There is nothing more demoralizing than going into the ring for a sparring session and having the cr*p beaten out of you.

Once you start landing flush shots on the better opponent...your confidence will automatically increase. When I 1st started boxing ...I just went in with the attitude that I wouldnt let anyone dominate me unless they were a pro.It works.

knee the fukker in the nutz. Werks fer me.

Scrap is right that Canvas is right.

    You're sparring with (a) prick(s).

That said, you can't expect to go in there every time and "win." Sometimes you'll eat one here and there and come out feeling like you "lost." But that's not to say that you should get beat up.

A Wuss would have never gone back to the gym after getting whupped in sparring , like so many people I have seen.

    That's the spirit!

I'd basically just go in and try not to think about it. Thinking too much can get you hurt sometimes.

Being the gym midget I can relate to this. I think it's best not to underestimate your strengths. As a fastish midget it is my best bet to go in off of my opponent's attack and to assume I must make some sort of evasive action between every combo I throw. I'm not strong enough to charge through but I can counter a little.

I guess my point is that I find that if I get too angry or emotional I walk into more because I forget my defence. I also try to throw more big punches so I add my own power to my opponents punches. I think when feeling threatened as a novice it can be natural to forget to defend AND attack. It's easier to only do one or the other but it hurts more.

I don't know if this is relevant to you or not and I'm not explaining myself very well but good luck anyway and let us know how it goes .

It will pass with experience....I had a kid in my gym once who had all the goods...speed strenghth good offense and defense....had some amatuer fights about 5 or 6 at the time...a new guy comes to the gym who had a ton of amatuer fights and they sparred....

The new guy was just so friken fast he was tagging this kid with ease...nothing hard just pitty pat shots but he was catching him...the kid kept turning his back as a defense??...and this kid had been in with harder hitters before and never flinched it was just the getting hit so often and an automatic reaction...

eventually he worked it out so his automatice reflex would not take over his focus and got it together...

    takes time...

Point is thats what the gym is for to work things like that out..nothing to be ashamed of really...more or less a composere isuue that will come with experience
