    Default The Best Under 25

    We've talked earlier about how the sport has aged over the past 15-20 years. In the 1970's, 1980's and very early 1990's one had great fights between established top fighters in their early 20's.

    As examples

    Duran was 21 when he was beaten by 21 year old Esteban Dejesus. Ray Leonard was 22 when he beat 21 year old Wilfred Benitez. Tommy Hearns was 22 when he knocked off 23 year old Pipino Cuevas. Donald Curry was 24 when he drilled 23 year old Milt McCrory.

    My question today is who are the top fighters today 25 or under?

    Amir Kahn is an obvious choice. Devon Alexander probably is too. Victor Ortiz maybe?

    Who are the sport's young guns today? Who should we already be paying attention to?

    Under 25, i would have to say Canelo Alvarez, Vanes Martirosyan (25), Brandon Rios (25), and Abner Mares also 25. Thats all i can think of, all of the top guys seem to be in their early 30's. Hopefully these guys can be the face of boxing a few years from now.

    For my likings;
    (aside from the ones already mentioned)

    The often forgotten "Chocolatito" Gonzalez has to be in the top spots.
    "Chemito" Moreno
    "Titere" Vasquez
    If Rios beats Antillon I'd add him to this list.

    Honor mentions to the Kameda Bros, Mikey Garcia, Jorge Linares, Antonio DeMarco, Kell Brook and Nathan Cleverly.

    One of the best young fighters I ever saw was Fernado Vargas, as well as Mike Tyson. Currently Brooks and Cleverly are very decent fighters.
