The trick to that punch, short of leaping in, is mastering the timing of the weight transference, when it shifts back to your rear foot after you step in. Try this: Throw a jab, shooting your arm out to full extension, then leave it there. Then walk up to it, keeping your arm extended. Move your front foot first, then your back foot, and as soon as the back foot settles, bend your arm and hook, your weight going onto your rear foot. You can hook off your jab that way, or step in and hook.
Or you can step in and to the left (assuming an orthodox fighter here), a little in but more left, without moving your right foot, then throw what is basically a straight left hand, your weight turning back over your right foot.
