Boxing like a lot of sports, you get out of it what you put into it.

Many boxers had to work another full time job in the early part of their career. I'm pretty sure Joe Frazier did.
A lot of boxers never get to the point where they can quit their job and box only.
It takes more discipline no doubt, but it can be done.
I've never trained like I did last year (mainly because I've been competing this year) and I was working from 7:30 am till 4pm 5 days a week on a building site... :P
so how many hours a day did you train when you were working full time?
If you can use your day job to train as well, you'll get hard like one of the pre 60s fighters.
Cutting wood, labouring, hay baleing ,all hard grinds will do you good.
IF you work in a high rise, do the steps.
Jog to work early enough to have a shower and change there.
If your at a desk lift your feet up,keep em up.
Write notes with the wrong hand
Lift your desk up and down slightly (silently) with your weakest arm outstretched, then elbow pump, then wrist joint pump etc etc
Works your mind too.
Good advise Andre you gotta use the tools that are available to u!

I did 2 hours in the gym 4 times a week sparring and training and 37 hours a week doing very heavy labour...Originally Posted by athlete.not.fighter

thanx u lot 4 the advise
im gonna b a champ 1 day
just to get it straight, aside from working full time, you felt this was adequate? I train about the same amount of time and i feel it's pretty good. you seem to know what you're talking about so if you say you were happy with 2 hours a day, then i'll be happy with at least the same.Originally Posted by AdamGB
As long as you are working hard enough in those 2 hours its more than adaquate. only the top pros and semi-pros can train all day every day and they are surrounded by nutritionalists, life style planners and routine planners etc... and thats only because they are so fit that we we do would barely stress them... but thats just at there level... we've gotta work up through the gears first
For years I worked at construction as well as boxed. At 545am I'd get in 30 or 45 minutes of wts in loading and unloading my work vehicle (having done 20 minutes of crunches at home @ 430am) then put in 8 hours with my arms overhead, or cutting wrapping and hanging wire (great for strength in hands wrists and forearms). Then more wt work to pack and go home, pushing my luck driving fast. Mon -Thurs I'd train a young man from 6:30-8 or so, then do my bit from 830 till about 10pm. I did my same 90 minutes 6 times a week, and on either sat or sun "my" boxer and I would have a session in which we would work on the one or two new things for the coming week, or work on problems from the previous week. In my life I have never been healthier nor happier. (And the young pugiliost now aged at 24 and making stupid pay as a foreman in my old trade, helped me unload my moving van last week.)
