What I meen is we don't have long distance phones in the UK cos where only a small island :P no idea what exactly they do... surely some one near you has one so you can ring this gym though?

Basically in the US you have two different types of phone service, local and long distance. Local would be you city and other cities that are within 10 to 15 miles of your city. Long distance service would be for cities farther away than that. My dad lives a little over an hours drive away and it is a long distance call to phone him.

And basically, long distance is the same exact thing as local, only they charge you out the ass for it, because they live a little farther away. Its usually divided up by area code, which leads to some awesome situations, like that time I lived right on the border of one area code, so it was long distance for me to call my friend who lived literally 3 houses down the street from me. My parents were NOT pleased when they discovered that one.
