I was wondering if there are any good workouts to improve my punching speed.

Dont mean to hijack the thread but Ive got a related question.

If I train with weights on my wrists will it actually increase punching speed when the weights are off?

I would think so, because you can really tell a difference in speed between throwing with heavier bag gloves and throwing with lighter sparring or competition gloves

you're asking for trouble. it will hyperextend joints.

for punching power, do plyometric training. also, you can simply wear weighted gloves, like 16ox'ers, or they even have bag gloves with built in weights. but you still can't beat anything plyometric in nature. explosivfe lifts and med ball work is tops.

Surely though Von, not meaning to be critical, surely heavy gloves and weights are going to have exactly the same effect.
Its just a weight on the end of your arm, no matter what shape or form it comes in.

For speed in footwork linked to arm movments:
People who have to think about what they are doing are slower than people who do those same things only on their reactions.
Shadow box,get it exactly right with thought behind it so you move and do set ups for the right reasons. Study why you do certain things until you know why your doing them.
Only when you (KNOW deeply why) can you really think speed into and onto those same movements and combos.
Then do the same thing during shadow boxing and go take it to sparring without the thought process and you have freed up mindspace which relays over into your actions.
Specific trained reactive reflexes come from knowing not thinking.
Train train train until you know know know then stop thinking about it so your mind is free to analize the oppositon when your in action.
That is when real free speed is experienced.

    I can explain it.
But I cant understand it for you.

true, to some extent, but we're takling ounces vs pounds. plus, the weight is embedded in the glove, not on the very end of the hand where it can create momentum problems.

if you want to do weighted movements, you're better off to do med ball punches and light dumbell shotputs. ie, elifts and ploymetrics.

Plyometrics can help also isometric holds on your elbow does wonders; check out rossboxing, ross covered alot of it in a couple of his articals.

The biggest thing is just focusing on your speed whether your working the bags, the mitts and throwing punches in general. The speed isn't just how fast you can throw your hand out their, but how fast you can bring it back to guard. Don't lock your arms, and don't leave your hand out there. Mohammed Ali said he'd imagine he was holding fly-swatter when he jabbed.

Concentrating on an aspect and working at it will allow you to improve in any task. After all that it's up to you to trust in your abilities and do what you trained for.
If you hear a voice within you saying that I am not a painter, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.

Interesting is speed, its all about utilizing your senses, the sense that slows you down the most is your eyesight. The 2 that you should utilize are your senses which react to response the quickest, touch and feel .There are loads of routines if you use the grey matter, they are not there just for protection.Shut your eyes when its safe to do so and listen to your body

What i do is, i got 1.5 hand weights and i shadowbox 2 minute rounds, switching the gloves off and on
and i think my punching speed has increased quite a bit, but i also just started actually training a month -2 ago so it could just be because of real training not street stuff.
