Is this one of those chicken and egg questions?

I've only heard the martial arts people refer to using the right hand (for an orthodox fighter) as a right cross. I assume you're talking about the orthodox fighter's power punch. Essentially, they are suppose to be the same, however it depends on who's throwing it.......or who they learned it from, cause I've seen some nasty right hands that haven't even been named yet or decided if they were infact punches. Oh well, we've all been a novice.

For the orthodox novice there is no such thing as a right hook. Ever! The right hook is for the south paw and the advanced orthodox fighter.

    Old town, that is correct.

Hitman, find a new trainer. lol. The right hook only works on the bag and if you have a guy on the ropes, and then it's a shovel-type body shot.

False!! the straight right is exactly that.straight. thrown from a lower position with the pinky finger knuckle of the closed fist almost touching the nipple the punch travels in a straight horizontal line to the target. the right cross is a punch that is thrown from a higher position and moves left "across" the throwers body to the target usually with a slight downward tragectory. If the right cross is thrown from the "hands up" position and down and not moving across the body it would be called an overhand right" of course the dividing line between these punchs is blurry and a matter of opinion and viewpoint of the person calling the fight.
    hope this helps

For an orthodox boxer. when he is off stance ie right foot forward as when he is pursuing he then is in position to throw a right hook.

find a new trainer ? thats why at the gym there are currently 5 midlands champions many of them getting inot at least the semis at national level
and yes maybe to the body it dosent work that well but for instance if u have someone coming towards u throwing the jab it can be used to slip the jab then bang it in over the top
