    Default Preperation

Hey all, new here. I've been thinking about getting into boxing ever since I have moved back to NJ and had to quit my "other sport" (rock climbing, no rocks in NJ =( ). I'm 22 years old, and I dont have any dreams of being the best lol, but I would like to box competitivly. However, I'm not naturally gifted for this sport I dont think. Currently 5'9 and only 135 pounds =(. I am no stranger to training hard though (i trained like mad for climbing) and I am willing to give it my all. However, I will not be living near a boxing gym for another few months. I was wondering if anyone could give me a few tips on how to prepare befor I hit the boxing gym. Should I just do some lifting, running, and weight gaining? Thanks in advance for any help.

Cardio (running, jump rope, etc) and ab work will help you out the most.

Exactly. In fact, it was a fight I got into with a fellow rock climber while on a mountain that made me realize I might be good at boxing. Trouble is, when I spar I tend to forget to take off all my climbing gear and sometimes I get tangled in the cords and trip.

I don't have a colourful sporting back ground so it's difficult for me to make suggestions regarding breaking into a new discipline. I do see many people walk through the doors of the club for the first time, and have been one of those people myself. I find the biggest best friend, or worst enemy is just plain old you. The best preparation anyone can bring into the club and keep em coming back is remaining focused and allowing him/her self the right to make many mistakes. I always tell the new people when teacking them how to shadow-box "Believe me, when you do this, it ain't gonna look that sexy, but you'll get there with some time." I'm not sure about other sports, but boxing requires patience. patience. patience. Therefore, I would bring that over cario and and six-pack.
