Who is the top prospect-prodigy in boxing?

Everybody knows about guys like Amir Khan, Andre Ward, Berto.

But there are some good prospects that are a bit more under the radar, a bit harder to see their fights. I'm bored so I tried to find some youtube footage for most of these guys but couldn't. Guys like the Peterson brothers, Lamont and Anthony. Jean Pascal, a 168 pounder from Canada who's probably the best RJ imitator out there. Jonathan Banks is a pretty good cruiserweight prospect. James Kirkland is a 154 pounder that fights a bit like Terry Norris. Also like Juan Manuel Lopez, the (I think) bantamweight from Puerto Rico.

One guy that's never on American TV is Jorge Linares. He fights out of Japan. He's a 130 pounder, good size, good technique overall, good jab, good body work, pretty smart fighter for a prospect. According to maxboxing.com he gave Pacman good sparring and embarrassed Ponce de Leon (Linares was fighting at 126 at the time, Ponce 122). Here's a clip, I think he could be pretty good:

Also Lucian Bute, a 168 pounder from Canada. Looks pretty good, real agressive, pretty fast, pretty strong. Fought pretty good competition for a prospect, dominated Kabary Salem and stopped him which is something Calzaghe couldn't do. Here's some of his last fight with James Obede Toney

Raul "The Cobra" Martinez (from Texas) 17-0-0 (12 KOs), don't have any videos of this bantamweight, but keep an eye out for him, he's got decent power and can definately box, kinda question his chin though.

I think I've seen him, maybe on Showbox or ESPN 2. There's also Abner Mares, although I haven't seen anything about him in a while.

Its hard to call Nobuo Nashiro a prospect since he's already beaten Martin Castillo for a title, but he is only 9-0.

Don't know many heavyweight prospects but Alexander Povetkin did win about everything you can win as an amateur and he has fought pretty good competition for a guy with only about 10 fights. This is his 6th fight with Richard Bango, a 17-1 guy whose only loss was to Valuev in 6, Valuev's 36th fight, and Povetkin stopped him in two. Maybe a little small, but doesn't look bad.

Probably one of my favorite prospects is Peter Quillin. Kid Chocolate is his nickname but he is lightning fast and packs a punch. I think he put some of his stuff on youtube.

CC Oumafan,I really like Linares...when did he spar with De Leon? Edwin Valero has moved camp to Japan and I heard he is linking up with Linares,possibly same stables?? Anyway,I hope Linares helps Valero polish up!! I heard Bute is impressive too..

Florante Condes beats out undefeated and more polished prospects Nkosinathi Joyi and Pornsawan Kratingdaenggym on the basis of one thing...power. Condes is 20-3-1, with all twenty of those wins coming via kayo. He is a southpaw to boot, and has upped his level of opposition without a drop in kayo ratio. His three points losses were close affairs, and they seem to have helped him in developing better boxing skills. Excitement and power are lacking in this division, so Condes will be a commodity in demand for 2007. Straweight prospect


Giovanni Segura - A high volume puncher that likes to get in there and brawl, who is getting good TV dates on fights aired by Mexican channel Telefutura. In his last fight he defeated former Colombian Olympian Carlos Tamara by wide margins, and knocked out former title challenger Jair Jimenez before that. Had five fights in 2006, and seriously upped his level of competition without suffering in terms of defensive lapses. Only knock on the kid is that he started to box a bit late in life, at age 19, but seems to have a natural sense for the ring at 24. Has good power, 12 kayos in 16 fights, and a solid push by Bob Arum's Top Rank promotions should get Segura near a title shot by the end of 2007.


Will rise in 2007: Roberto Vasquez - This is the kind of guy I root for. Four of his last five opponents have either been former champions or have contested for a world title, and he defeated all five. Since his second year as a pro, this Panamanian southpaw has mixed with a level of opposition that was superior to him in terms of won-loss records, and other than a controversial debut loss, he has defeated all comers. Has a very good amateur pedigree, and solid backing when fighting at home. At 23 has plenty of time to mature, but it looks like he will get a title shot by late 2007. This after he traveled to Japan recently and narrowly defeated Takefumi Sakata in an eliminator. Next up, the Venezuelan Lorenzo Parra in late 2007.

CC. Linares looks pretty good. I don't know if he and Valero are with the same people but its possible. I don't know exactly when Linares and Ponce sparred, I read about it I think about 2 or 3 months ago but I'm not sure when it happened. Keep in mind he is a bit bigger than Ponce although I could see his style giving Ponce some problems.

I've only seen Lopez once, it was on the undercard of some PPV, can't remember which. He looked pretty good, although he was fighting a guy brought in to lose, but that's no different than most prospects. If I remember correctly he was a southpaw, kind of a counterpuncher but looked like he had some power too. Looked pretty good.
