Default Training in a MMA gym?

I found a gym close to my house that trains boxers, but it is not their speciality. The do more kickboxing and jui-jitsu training than boxing. They have a ring, numerous heavy bags, speed bags, and double end bags. But I am not to sure about the quality of training I would receive there. The added bonus is that Ross Purrity helps train there, so there is a knowledgeable person overseeing everything. Anybody have any experience of trainging in a gym like this? If so how was the experience? Thanks and cc's for any comments.

well, what are your goals? you'll NEVER win an IBF title training with mma specialists.

That said, kickboxers are tough dudes too. If it came down to geography, I would have been glad to traing in kickboxing. The closest gym to me was boxing so my decisions was easier. But now that I know what I know, I'm very happy with boxing.

That's a tough one. I've seen some decent boxers training from a gym that trains both. I would worry about picking up the kickboxing style. For the boxing ring, they don't do very well because they're too flat footed. I don't know, maybe chck it out and ask them about the successes they have with their boxers.

and a cc to both for the response.

If you've got the choice, try and find a boxing gym, but if its the choice between an mma gym or training yourself, the mma gym wins every time as you'll still get the conditioning etc. What i would say from my own experience is that i went to train mma at the same time as i was training boxing, and the bloke taking the kickboxing area of the sessions was an ex muay thai champ and so was very set in his ways. Thge footwork in particular was very flat and he taught you to step rather than push off with the back leg when moving forwards etc. The stance was also a bit more square on and the hands were more palms facing forwards than you would expect with traditional western boxing, also the style was totally different, fighting in short burts rather than keeping on the jab etc. This didnt fit at all with my boxing and so i left to concentrate more on that.

Basically, if you was get training from a coach specialising in boxing then go for it, if you are going to have to train with the kickboxers and adapt their style to that of boxing then id personally stay away.

Hope that made sense and was a bit of help.
