Now here's an enticing prospect - the devilishly witty, flouncing, debonair and highly unpredictable Russell Brand hosting the Brits. Live. For the first time since that oh-somemorable Sam Fox/Mick Fleetwood debacle in 1989, there will be no day-long delay in transmission. Even when the ceremony has been tidied up before broadcast, the Brits have always been a mixture of the cringe-making and the outrageous, probably due to the heady combination of rock stars and alcohol. And with Brand added to this combustible brew, who knows how the night will turn out? But, hey, it's all about the music, isn't it? Lily Allen, whose Smile was either as annoying as a wasp in a jam jar or the sound of the summer depending on your viewpoint, is surely a dead cert in the British female solo artist category. The Arctic Monkeys, so beloved of politicians desperately trying to be groovy, will be given a run for their money by Snow Patrol in terms of commercial success and sheer ubiquity (there's hardly a TV drama in the land that hasn't used Chasing Cars on its soundtrack during the past year) as best British Group. And Oasis receive a Brit for "outstanding contribution", which they will presumably accept with their usual good grace, charm and humility.
