Let's hope Larry stays! Plus replacing him with Max Kellerman is not the answer. While Larry may be a little off, he's still great and speaks his mind.

Well maybe HBO got smart and thought if they are going to replace a classic guy like Merchant, it should not be with a guy like Kellerman. Kellerman seems like a nice guy, but more on par with a local affilliate boxing. A guy who does local fights but not big fights on HBO. The guys I really liked were Gil Clancy and Tim Ryan. Al Bernstein is great also. What about Dave Bontempo

Oh man! cc for the update.
Does this mean HBO listens to their audience??
Merchant fans in the public and in the media have been pretty vocal about his possible departure.
If that was even a small part of the network's reconsideration, big ups to all those who stood for all that's right in the world.
    Best boxing news all weekend!
    So far...

Daxx, I am too tired to answer, as I have been working on my book and on some articles. Let's just say I've been through this one too many times and have stated my position too many times probably on too many sites too many times. I have not liked Larry Merchant all the way back to when he was sports editor of a Philly newspaper. In my opinion (and remeber you asked), he is a mean spirited dimuntive (130 pound) guy frustrated athlete who subconciously has a lot of anger against boxers. His constant need to see a slug fest is one indication as is his acrimony toward BHOP and/or PBF who don't fight in the approved Merchant manner. But all that aside, I have several vignettes that I refer to in my book and I just as soon not disclose them here. Suffice it to say that what he did to Sonny Liston after Liston destroyed Patterson back in the day was the single cruelest thing I have ever seen a scribe do. Larry reminds me of those guys I went to shool with or worked with who always liked to get a laugh off of someone's eles's misfortune. And as an athlete myself (Football, Baseball and Boxing) he also reminds me of guys we used to refer to as jock sniffers. I think they are referred to as something else these days. Aside from that, I don't like him.

Merchant sort of put Emanual Steward in his place didn't he? Emanual kept saying Oscar is getting tired and would keep saying it, and Larry got fed up after awhile and said something like "well he might get tired eventually, but let's just watch the fight".
