Hitting

________________________________________
Proper punching is the result of a systematic studyof how to hit straight, fast, and accurately, using body instead of arm power. Hitting from the shoulder is not a natural act- notice how most people swing their blows, like a cat or a bear- and it is not learned accidentally. Being faster the straight blow will beat the arced punch to the target every time, and as there is less chance of missing, the higher frequency of hits means more damage done. It is based on an understanding of body structure and leverage, using body weight in every blow. The arms merely carry the punch; they alone cannot provide sufficient power. True power, speed and accuracy are achieved only by shifting the weight in such a manner that the hips and shoulders precede the arm to the center line of the body.(picture a rod through the top of your head, or, if you prefer, your spinal cord)
If this is not done you will not have body weight in the punch. There are two ways to do this. First, a pivot or quick turn of the waist; Second, a full body pivot, shifting the weight from one leg to the other.
Hitting and pushing are exact opposites. In hitting picture the crack of a whip, with force slowly concentrated then suddenly expended. In pushing the force is expended at the start and fades as the arm leaves the body. In hitting the feet are under thebody and balance is maintained, while in pushing balance is disturbed because the force is generated by shoving off the rear foot.
Picture a 2"x12" board 2' long, with a hole in the center to accomodate a metal rod upon which the board can twist freely. At either end of the board is a peg with a boxing glove at the end, facing forward. Turn the rod to the right and the glove on the left is thrust forward while the other is pulled back in reserve. Twist it the other way and the process is reversed. The glove is always driven forward by the twist of the rod, and one glove is always back if the other is forward. That is the concept of how to hit.
In human terms, power is generated by a quick twist of the waist, not a gentle swaying. Pivot over a straight left leg; if the line remains unbroken, the hips are relaxed and free to swing and if the hip and shoulder precede the arm to the center line tremendous power will result. If the line is broken- the straight left leg- power is lost because that leg is the pivot point upon which the force generating twist is based.

The most useful bit of info on power punching ive seen on this site. If you can swing both hips through transferring bodyweight before the arm follows you will get tremedous knockout power. Think of a golfer swinging both hips through transferring all his bodweight into the swing along with the power of the arm, whipping it through. Punching i would say is 40% legs 40% torso and 20% arms. I teach the double hip technique in martial arts and its a tremendously powerful blow.
