OK, so just turned 17 a couple weeks ago, no big deal really as 17 means nothing other then the fact that you're almost done with high school. 18 is the big one. You can be charged for felonies, sign a lease, buy porn, cigarettes, dip or whatever you like. Also means you can get your own tattoo at a shop here in California and not have any apprehensiveness on the part of the artist.

So, I've been wanting a tattoo for the longest time now. Me and my friend used to talk about it all the time when we were littler, he was Samoan and his family had a bunch of artist in it. He's since died, and I always wanted to get something to remember him as he was basically my best friend for 5 years which is longer then I've ever really held a friend because I moved so much. But now I'm kind of getting away from that idea at least for the time being.

As it stands right now, I want a custom tattoo, something like a portrait of that sort on my back right shoulder. I want to get my shoulders, and my sides done before I start messing with my arms. And I want them all to be concealed easily. And I'm not big on tattoos on the legs.

Anyways, as I've thought more and more about this, I think I want a boxing tattoo. I don't box, but the sport is obviously big to me, it's why I spend so much time at this place and probably the reason that I'm going to work at this becoming a journalist thing. In fact, there isn't much of a probably, I've been dead set on this for some time now.

So I figured no better place to come here with it. Not immediately when I came to this, I thought about Ali. One of the biggest icons ever in sports, a guy I would be comfortable getting tattooed on my back because of who he is and was in and out of the ring. And it wouldn't be hard to find a picture worthy of going on the shoulder.

But then the more I started to think, my Grandpas favorite fighters were Joe Louis and Archie Moore. Two of the more respected fighters of all time, and there are a bunch of pictures of both that I would like to see as tattoos. One of them is that famous sepia picture with a young Joe Louis loading up for the camera. I think that would work real good down the side. And I'm a big fan of that color for tattoos, and with some of the portrait works I've seen with pictures that have way less clarity in the face and the artist have turned out amazing works. Of course it would cost a penny or two to get a custom portrait like that done but I wouldn't mind.

Most of all I think it would absolutely blow my grandpa away, as he really lights up when he talks about Joe Louis. He was just a young kid, younger then I am now, and when he gets going about Louis, well it's hard to stop him. And even at 72, he can go back 65 years with ease to tell you the story of when he listened to Lewis survive Conn on the radio, or how Archie Moore gave him the thumbs up after one of his fights in San Francisco. So I think the combination of things would work well.

Anyways, I know JT has a nice piece on his chest. I think Monkey has something on his chest but I never looked at it at any great length. Anyone else have/getting/thinking about getting tattoos? And I've done more then a fair share of reading, but any advice?

You know at 32 i doubt if i'll bother now but have been saying for years i'd get some.
Thing i hate is the fact they go out of fashion/popularity so f*cking quick, take the trbal band that wraps around the bicep...
The whole world got them around 7/8 years ago and they just look sh*t and too common now.
Love the ones above girls asses if i'm honest and may still get a swallow on my hand or neck

That's what I think about the tribal too. I think I'm going to bank on Joe Louis not becoming a trend

And I love the tramp stamps. A couple years ago all the seniors in High School had them, and I couldn't wait. Now I'm a Senior and I don't know one girl my age with one

Honestly, the best thing you can do is wait.... I got my 1st one at 26, 2nd one at 28, and 4 in the year and a 1/2

They were all well thought out and symbolic to me. I can guarantee you would be hard pressed to find anyone else with the same Tattoos as me. No fads here

Also make sure you dont get a tattoo that you cant cover with only a t-shirt on (no forearms, names on necks, fingers, wrists etc.) ... People still judge on appearance unfortunately

Just think it through Adam.. I have 2 friends who own Tattoo shops.. were I live there are alot of shops come and go and dont turn out quality work and after time it shows... Not to mention people who really regret the things they get tattooed on them and look to get it modified years later.... Trust me Bro sometimes I help out at the front desk and there are a shitload of people scheduling getting coverups close to 50%

Thanks for that JT, was looking for you to post on this one.

The thing is, I know I want the tattoo. I know I sounded apprehensive and uncertain in the first post, but I know I want the tattoo. And I know where I want my first (going up the side, which I hear is ideal for portraits), it's all a matter of it being drawn up really because I want something behind it, maybe a ring and a skyline is what I'm thinking right now. Or Brown Bomber lettering. I have a year to figure out.

I have a year to go, my 17th birthday just passed on the 13 of June, so I have plenty of waiting to do especially considering I pretty much know what I want. And it would mean a lot to me, considering boxing and horse racing has always kind of been the bond between me and my grandpa, and most of the stuff I know about the old time boxing stems directly from him and the tapes/newspapers/stories he kept specifically to pass down to a son/grandchild. It just happened to be me, so I really can't think of a much better tattoo to symbolize that. Family isn't as high on my priority list as it probably should be sometimes, so this would be a big deal to me anyways. Would never get it covered up.

Right now the big deal is how it is going to come out. I want my tattoo to be awesome, and just browsing BMEink.com, there are so many portraits there that are way below my standards. Probably about 75% I would absolutely hate for me to come out not 100% satisfied with my tattoo. So right now I'm trying to figure out who would be the best to do the tattoo on the west coast, price isn't really an issue. After High School I'm probably going to a JC for the first 2 years instead of straight to a 4 year, so my only real costs are going to be my apartment and food. My mom said she'll cover any tattoo I wanted so long as it could be covered up (I would never get one that couldn't be anyways, I don't even like leg tattoos), but if I have to pay for quality then I wouldn't mind paying for a chunk of it myself.

I would like to know though, how long in advance do you usually have to schedule something like this? Especially if it's from a well known, reputable artist. That could be a hitch. I don't think price is an issue, and if I'm getting someone who is fairly well known, then I don't think I'll have to worry about sanitary stuff and price isn't an issue. But if I had to schedule something crazy like a half a year in advance, then that could be a problem.

That's one of the funniest things ever. Steve-O is one of my favorite guys from Jackass along with Ryan Dunn and Bam. That is just awesome.

He also got a tattoo of a smiley face while on a bumpy golf cart ride.

Sounds like you got the right attitude.... Here is the chronological order.

    1) Find a drawing, picture etc. of a design or concept or Draw your own

    2) After research on a reputable artist, go down with your concept and discuss with the artist, he can tell you how it will come out based on location of the body, colors etc.

    3) If you really gel with the artist and you guys are flowing on ideas, then schedule an appointment. Most times you will need to leave a deposit for the time slot.

The night before your tattoo eat alot of protein(not from the friend on his bed either ) steak, chicken. Same thing with the morning of, Eggs or protein shake etc... that way you minimize bruising. Also bring a Gatorade with you to keep fortified, more people pass out than you think. you dont want to look like a pussy so better to keep fortified. When your getting tattooed your body is tramuatized and put under stress thats why you keep it fueled to better cope.

The outline is the worse since its the sharpest, deepest and most deliberate because its the foundation of the art itself, after that the shading is a breeze.

Depending on the piece you get, you might have to schedule another session to complete the work.

    hope that helps

Thinking about drawing my own but the background is really getting me. But I got a lot of time to figure that out and friends who can help me out.

Thanks for the advice on the protein too, the way my brother made it sound he said it was just a deep scratching feeling. His is on the arm though. I imagine the stomach, especially over the ribs will be more of a problem.

CC in 24 though, thanks for that. Think I'll save drawing it out for the next time the site crashes.

Alright kids, just don't do what my son did to me. He wanted a tatoo. He told me it was ok with his mom (my ex). So we went to this place in Rhode Island that was recommended by a friend of mine. So he got a tatoo of pair of boxing gloves on his shoulder. Several days after he got home he asked his mom to help put some ointment on the tatoo. When she asked who gave him permission to get a tatoo (he was 17 at the time and needed a parent to sign for him) he said "Dad did." After I took the heat I thanked him for throwing me under the bus. Kids!!

    Cold

California doesn't even have a parental consent law. You need to be 18 period. Either way, I don't think my Dad is going to be quite fond of the tattoo. He loves boxing, but I don't think he'll understand.

    One that says 'RESPECT'

I've thought about getting a tatoo, I just have to figure out what I want first.

Hey amat. I'm not sure if this will be too helpful, but here goes...
I've got 3 tats (it'll be 4 in a couple of weeks), they're all pretty big, except one. I'm 25, I got my 1st one at 23 after wanting one since I was your age (Christ, typing that made me feel old). A rule of thumb I've always followed when deciding on what to get and where to get it - is to wait for about 2-3 months (sometimes more), and if I still want to get it, I go and get it done... All of mine have personal significance to me. My first one was bought for me by my mom, the second one was something drawn by my best friend, and the third one was a tat in memorial to those killed in WW2 (something I have a massive interest in). The fourth one is going to be a tribute to my mom who passed away about 1 1/2 months ago.
I love tats and they're very addicting in their own way, but never, EVER, get anything trendy (like the tribal shit), some of my friends have those, and they almost always end up getting them covered up... Don't get some flusey's name either
My mom hated the idea of tattoo's until I got some, and afterwards, after I explained my reasoning to her, she loved the idea of them and was even planning to get some of her own, so I wouldn't worry too much about what your dad thinks, I doubt he'll care all that much.
I think I read that you're thinking about getting one on your stomach, from what I understand that hurts like fuck. I have a friend who does tats for a living and he has confirmed this. But it doesn't hurt that bad, the one on my back took 5 1/2 hours and it only really hurt during the outline, and afterwards it feels kinda like a sunburn.
Sorry for the long rambling post, hope it helps.
