It's all the same....meat (beef [shredded or ground], chicken, mariscos [seafood mainly shrimp or tilapia]), freijoles (refried beans), rice, and a tortilla either hard or soft.

If I was just starting out with mexican food I'd try either a Quesadilla or Enchiladas.

A Quesadilla is basically the mexican version of a grilled cheese sandwich, though it's usually more than just cheese.....you have the choice of beef, chicken, shrimp along with some peppers, onions, and mushrooms

Enchiladas are beef, chicken, cheese, or beans rolled up and covered in enchilada sauce which isn't hot but flavorful and they are usually served with rice and beans.

If you go to the right place you can get good fish tacos.....

Pollo Fundido is good as well

And if you use a hot sauce use Cholula, it is the best!

It's best if you make your own Guac or get it at an authentic Mexican restaurant.

Fajita's are damned good too, you'd love those

Mexican restaurants are to San Diego what Indian restaurants are to Birmingham (not Alabama)

Fajitas are the best! Especially when they're still well hot and sizzling.

A spicy beef burrito can hit the spot too.

A mahi-mahi or swordfish taco is also nice.

Tilapia is extremely good....it's a meaty fish and being a freshwater fish it has no mercury in it

    OK, Steel....

If I were you I'd start off on the normal stuff get yourself a beef burrito or some 'Flautas' beef or chicken whatever they offer.

You also wanna try our seafood, Shrimp cocktail with other things of choice in the cocktail such as Clam, Octopus, Scallops etc etc.

Then I would move on to the more traditional stuff..
Mole poblano is chicken covered in a some what sweet dark paste that's made with chili, peanuts, cookies, olive oil and blended together served with rice.

I would strongly suggest you taste Barbacoa/Birria this is like goat stew (but the meat is one of the best meats you'll taste if done right) the stew is spicy and you gotta add lemon, diced onion and cilantro.

For drinks you can never go wrong with 'Jaimaica' water this is made from dried hibiscus flowers H. sabdariffa it's also known as roselle or Jamaican sorrel.
You can also never go wrong with 'Horchata' rice water and probably the most popular of all freshly made natural waters.

    Good luck.

A few things. Your asking this because you're coming to America right?

If that is it, then if you get a burrito, make sure you get it at a taqueria instead of at a proper restaraunt. If you go to an actual sit down restaraunt then get something like beef enchiladas. Restaraunt burritos are basically like enchiladas without the sauce on top. Not like the foiled burritos that are a pound of meat inside one tortilla. That's what you want. Enchiladas are much smaller but they are good.

As for what burrito to get, try a few out. My personal favorite is chili verde without the sauce on top. But if it's on the menu, try out a carnitas burrito. Shredded pork all sauced up, fucking delicious but it's not on to many menus out here and sometimes it is spiced up wrong. But if you get a good one it's tops.

Also, I like to mix my beans and rice up when I get them. Don't know what difference it makes but it makes for a really good side rather then have them separated.

Don't really like the Jamaica stuff, but horchata is awesome. My only real job was at a mexican restaraunt/taqueria type place and I would ALWAYS have horchata. Then one day the machine broke, and quite literally exploded. Sent the stuff all over the clean dishes, all over the chips and all over the ceiling and just everywhere. And this happened during a rush when only two of us were working so ever since then I've said fuck horchata
