I think the problem is the lack of awareness for a lot of the great fighters. Personally I haven't seen a lot of fights and because of that I haven't been able to see a lot of great fighters. I didn't know about Recardo Lopez until you told me about him.

I think of this generation Marquez has really shown that he could do it all, he's clever, game, and has proven that he can adapt to his opponents.

Marquez learned by sparring with Lopez, from what I've heard.

Wow, that I haven't heard. I think that there's a lot to be learned by who's in the gym at the time of day.

Say Joe, what was that name of that mexican fighter that you told me about. I believe his nickname was "The Golden Boy" this being long before Delahoya's time.

I never was able to find any of his fights, but I remember hearing him talking about this one fight, I believe it was for the title, he says, "While there's guys that have to be carried out of the ring, I had to be carried into the ring." It was probably one of those times where a fighter gets a shot at a title a weight class below their natural weight, and that they had to weighed in at ringside. That was hard time to be a fighter.

He had very good punching technique, but, in the tape I have, he was overpowered by Basilio. My mother, like 2.5 million other people, claims to have seen him fight Lauro Salas in an LA restaurant. Which is funny because Salas was known as a stay at home type of guy.

Juan Manuel Marquez is a guy i believe fits into this genre as he mainly works from countering situations

I was wondering if Locche would be mentioned. To me, the real defining factor of a great defensive fighter is ability to counter. Its "hit and don't get hit."

I was thinking about Locche myself. He was very tricky, I heard that he could draw a fighter in while he was on the ropes, and he'd spin them around and start beating the hell out of them. He didn't have quick feet, but his defense and timing was so good that you could nail one of his feet to the canvas and he still wouldn't get hit much. I liked seeing the one move he used against Cervantes where he bent at the waist prompting an uppercut, but he always knew when it was coming and was ready to counter. He was a great counterpuncher, I just can't recall when he countered when his feet were set.

That's why he had 14 KOs in over 100 fights.
