I was ringside at MAB's first US fight when he had just turned 18, and have followed his career ever since. I've seen him train and seen him fight numerous times. I saw JMM's first US fight when he was 5-1-1 and he was amazing. I have since seen him train and fight several times. I have been wanting to see these two- two of my favorite fighters- fight for at least 10 or 12 years. I don't know who would win, though I tend to lean to Barrera, but Marquez is so good. I think that Barrera would've won in their peak years, because Marquez aged a bit better.

I feel that a younger Barerra did not avail of the intellect or ring saavy that the elder barerra did. JMM was exceptionally skilled throughout his career despite not being as exciting or as sensational....
As much as i love Barerra i feel JMM may just have the wrong style for him.

The younger version of Marquez was the most ruthless counter puncher in the game and 1 of the most avoided fighters at the lower weights. Can you name 1 fighter Erik Morales never wanted to fight, when offered? That's because there are none, expect for JMM. He was took skilled and the younger MAB was ruthless, agressive but,as Junior Jones showed, could be beaten. JMM would have countered him,and beaten him.No doubt in my mind.

People forget that, as a young fighter Barrera was primarily a boxer. He altered his style once he began appearing on ppv fights, but the fighter that beat Eddie Cook, Jimenez for his first title, and so on, he was a boxer. For a couple years he started taking chances and just fighting, but that was a very brief period in his career. I've watched this guy since he was 18 and, I'm telling you, he was a boxer way before he came out winging left hooks and scoring early kos.

I'm with you GNO. I've got his career on dvd and early on he was a boxer (I've said it before but I guess since I've long defended MAB some doubt my opinion ) he had a spat as a crowd pleasing all out Chavez type and back to boxer. If he wasn't he would never have been able to switch back to boxing - which is when people started to notice the 'big' change. If it wasn't there to begin with he couldn't have switched.

Very interesting matchup maybe it was a promoter/managerial thing that kept them apart till the later stages of their careers. Shame really. Imagine them going at it round the time MAB/Morales I
