Default stuff smeared on the face

I apologize for my severe lack of knowledge in regards to boxing. My only exposure has been recently watching "The Contender" on television. I was wondering if you could tell me what the stuff is that they smear all over the boxers face during a match (looks like vasaline).
    Thanks

pretty sure its to keep from getting cut and to cause punches to slide and lose some effectiveness

Yeah thats why if your corner puts too much on then the ref tells them to go back to the corner so it can be wiped off.
