get heavy gloves, they will feel your punches when you get more skilled.
but it does helps them to get less injury
i train with 18oz, better for training (speed endurance power) you will notice this when you put on your competition gloves.
so it is better for both!!!!

i would call off that league since you all will not be experienced by this summer. and prob will end up
    with big injury.

the worst thats gonna happen is a broken nose...Boohoo
broken nose is not that of a big injury
you'll be boxing again after a weak or so but

a dislocated or broken jaw is mutch worse than a simple broken nose
broken ribs are les confortable than a simple broken nose
    and alot more

damn that must been a very long round with a broken rib.
but i dont think it was very wise of your trainer to keep you in the ring
cuz a friend had his rib broken during some full-sparring, and at the ER they told him
it was good he quit the training session cuz a blow on a broken rib can (i think the chances are small)
cause your lung to burst, (dunno englisch word). and that would made bigger problems

some folk just want to do it old school or they might have thought he was trying to quit.
we had a sign at my old gym. which sort of went - I don't want to hear your excuses because I've used them all before. He was an ex-boxer.
