My all-time favorite horror movies (movies that legit scared/disturbed me):
    1. Jaws
    2. The Exorcist
    3. Psycho
    4. The Shining
    5. Silence of The Lambs
    6. Audition
    7. Friday The 13th
    8. Freaks
    9. Alien
    10. The Ring

Not a lot of literal "monsters" in great horror movies....maybe at times you can get one or two, but it's the suspense that gets the viewer. You don't see the shark in Jaws at all, you don't see the Xenomorph in Alien too much, you don't see the crazy side of Norman Bates in Psycho until just the end, you don't get the craziness of Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs but for a few scenes, nobody knows what the fuck is happening in Friday the 13th until the end and then the very end everything really is all "What the fuck?"

With all of the psychology behind Dracula or Frankenstein or The Mummy Hollywood can't come up with winning HORROR movie ideas for these characters? I mean really it's like they have no imagination or no concept of storytelling without crazy ass special effects.

Ah we see the shark in jaws a number of times. I prefer a good psych horror than torture porn but saw and some others of the genre were done well. I brought up the monster thing only cause you did in a previous post. Aliens is an example where the monster is quite frightening. The shining is amongst my favorites. Needful things was another movie based on a king book which was quite good. Did you see Gerald's game on Netflix? No where near as good as the book but it was decent. The crazies was good but I am partial to zombie movies and movies like The Road with viggo mortenstein which I highly recommend. In movies like inglorious bastards the Nazis could be considered the monsters, even though a certain someone calls me a nazi here on occasion.

You prefer psychological horror, I think most people do.....look at Exorcist and Psycho and The Shining....all of those are psychological horror. They build up and build up and build up, The Ring was good at that. Friday The 13th did the torture porn/slasher kind of effects, but again it was all about the build up.

Now imagine Dracula where it was all about the build up. Closest we've had to that is Francis Ford Coppala's 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' which was pretty solid as a movie but still could have been scarier. If Dracula was done maybe more the way 'Devil's Advocate' was done then that's a little better.

Suspension of disbelief is the big issue with horror movies, you've got to play within the rules of life as we know it for the majority of the time and then slip in 1 or two "How the fuck did that happen" moments or "what are we dealing with" kind of emotions, like in 'Independence Day' when the first contact is made with the alien ships.

Yes Coppola s dracula was very good. Gary oldman was excellent. I think you said you didn't like the babbadook but it is another example of not really seeing the bad guy but for glimpses. I've been home for a couple days and I watched the descent for the second time. It's not really a watch twice movie but it was a decent topical typical scary movie, plus I like spelunking

The Babadook was ham handed....it was just forced all the way. It was eye rape......everything is crooked, size is distorted, color is off, everything sensory wise is off enough to make you uncomfortable, but I think what was initially a good idea ended up being so over done that you couldn't help but notice how askew everything was. In The Shining it's subtle and subtle things draw you in and when you're drawn in you get the shit scared out of you when naked bathtub lady turns into a decaying mess.

'Bone Tomahawk' was a pretty solid flick and could be considered horror.

Now for horror-comedy it's got to be 'Tucker & Dale vs Evil' and 'Cabin In The Woods' along with Netflix's 'The Babysitter'....all are very funny, but also they have their jump scare moments.

Black Panther - really good best superhero movie since dark knight
IT - I actually enjoyed it. was'nt scary but good characters was like a grown up goonies film.
Jumanji - remake with the rock (i've never seen original)- absolute trash but the kids enjoyed it.

One of those where you shout at the screen and the kind of thing that could happen. Shocking but very well made

good film that, I've not seen it for ages.
The movie was ok, the group of kids harass that couple right?

If you want shocking watch one of the 'I spit on your grave' films. The remake was pretty brutal, the sequel was not bad either.
Eden lake is pretty shocking, I spit on your grave remake is fkin full on, I found it difficult to watch the rape scene
