    Default question on stance

anyone got any advice on stance, ive been changing from a regular stance to a side-on stance (very side on feet in line) lately, i get hit a lot less in the side stance and find my general movement (and jab) better but my coach doessnt rate this side stance, says i will have no power in my cross?? any advice or suggestions are much appreciated, thanks

Thats funny, because thats the base stance I teach, and my fighters are notorious for their power

It's different at my gym. They advocate the fighters to stand more side-on like what you've been experimenting with. On the contrary of what your trainer said, I find that I have a lot more power in my cross when I narrow my stance.

If you hear a voice within you saying that I am not a painter, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.

In martial arts a straight line stance is called a cat stance, and as long as you sort your hips out, its the most punishing stance to deliver punches from

thanks for the good advice guys, my coach reckons cos i am short and a southpaw that the regular stance is better but im def getting better results from side on and not eating as much punches so i will keep working on it and try and get the best overall way .

I started out in a Tyson like stance, because I watched too much Tyson fights. Through the years I switched more and more to a side on stance. It puts the shoulder in line to help with defense, and frees the front (left in my case) arm for offensive purposes.

That because your presenting less of a target, your opponent has to set you up through a series of shots rather then being presented with an obvious target.

this is true, sparred tonight and found that i worry less about defence(cos smaller target area for opponent) so i got more time to think about landing my own shots, thanks for all the advice, has made a big difference, cheers

Last time I went to the gym, a new trainer had me standing more straight on.

That's about 5 different stances I've been taught now.

You should be taught as many as possible in the time frame you have to work with, just so you know what your looking at in there
