Default Why don't more fighters fight on their toes anymore?

It seems like a lost art in boxing. I think the main reason Manny has maintained his speed is because he hasn't become flat footed. We saw Roy JOnes Jr and Mayweather slow down in terms of their bounce IMO because they prefer to have their feet solidly on the ground. I think Oscar wasn't able to come forwad like he did against Mayweather because Manny is always on his toes, he was able to come and get out so far that Oscar couldn't counter him at all. He didn't move as much, but his footwork reminded me a little of Leonard who use to love to stay on his toes. I wish more guys would still do it.

Well i know this hasn't really got anything to do with this thread, but im an Amateur boxer and i've always boxed on my toes. It feels more natural to me, i can snap my punches better and ETC.

I think all boxers should do it, and they usually get more power. Mosley only looks good on his toes, same with Oscar. I think more and more fighters are becoming flat footed, and its showing the obvious examples I see are guys like Pavlik who are so flat footed that any lateral movement seems to make it impossible for them to get off. Even guys like Trinidad who were kind of on their toes, had their balance to improperly placed that movement made it impossible for them to get off.

It wouldn't work for everybody, just stylistically, a guy like Zab is too flat footed though, with his defensive liabilities and style he should move more.

    Perception vs Reality
Alot of guys are still up on their toes, but most of the names you get to see all the time are older fighters, they have to sit on their punches more. They dont have the stamina to bounce around the joint.
A serious power punch comes from a flatter foot stance

I was wondering this during the Roy/Joe fight. Roys best attribute used to be his footwork.

    Couldn't agree more.
A lot of power can be used using your legs from having your toes on the ground.

I think it's because of the energy it takes and and the condition the fighter has to be in to stay on his toes for 12 rounds. Also, in general it is harder to be on balance to throw power shots.

It doesnt take more energy, Rubber soles on canvas has more friction. Its bad technique where the problem lies, on your balls of your feet when reqiured doesnt put pressure on The Achillies or Groin the muscles you need to drive when Punching or evading a Punch.

Maybe when your 35 you'll prefer them firmly on the ground too

I like either the on the toes fight style, or those stalker type fighters like Margarito and Corrales when he was going... Flat footed, but you could say they are "mentally" on their toes when they are attacking..

Anyway, there isn't an incredible amount of guys that fight on their toes these days, and it is always good to see... exciting..

Right. Power punches must be firmly anchored and that anchor comes from feet firmly planted on the ground. You can still throw power punches even while moving if you can sort of lean on those punches when they land on their targets....
    ...but...
...you risk losing your balance on the way, especially if you miss...

Once in awhile, get outside in fresh air, take a deep breath & with a deep sigh, let out all the things that's bottled up inside you & be free, & you'll get a glimpse of nirvana.

Power comes from balance and Technique, balance being the main player the nuerons perform better
