Stracey over Napoles
Stracey over Napoles
This is no upset, but the next brit to go down is Hatton
Curry v Honeyghan was the biggest upset by a British fighter bar non.
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
Mark Kaylor - Buster Drayton? Or was Kaylor not really big enough to call his loss an upset?
Randy Turpin v Ray Robinson has gotta be the biggest.
It was Sugar Ray Robinson after all
Turpin won because Ray was stale after fighting in France a week earlier and proved it was a fluke when he beat his in the return. Lloyd battered Curry and nobody thought he was going to win that fight.
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
Turpin was ahead on points and had opened a monstrous cut on Ray's eye. The fight would have been stopped on the cut within a couple of rounds ..... Robinson pulled it out of the bag and stopped Turpin late on (some argued the ref was a bit premature to do this)
That made it 1-1 .......... Ray never gave Randy a rematch. Turpin was possibly the only fighter that Ray could never figure out. He was a very big middleweight and his upper body was more like a light heavy, he has an enormous reach and he would lean back and jab people silly before dropping in the right. Good firmess, good skills and stamina, good chin.
Turpin was world class and it most certainly wasn't a fluke. I think it's fair to say that he caught Robinson cold in the first fight and surprised him, but he owned ray throughout that fight and also for most of the rematch.
Master - have you watched both fights ...... if you go through them a couple of times and just forget it's Sugar Ray in there ..... Turpin made the best fighter who ever lived look pretty ordinary !
