Highs..
Foreman v Holyfield. The very first ppv I chipped in on and first time gathered up drinking some beers at a friends house. Went into the fight 'an absolute farce' but came out with renewed respect for both.
Seeing Yuri Arbachakov, Koichi Wajima, Guts Ishimatsu, Harada, Joe Tatsuyoshi, Jung Koo Chang, Yuh, and Orzubek Nazarov for the very first time. Some were current and some were retired but "discovering" new Asian fighters by trading for tapes opened up the sport long before point & click came along.
Holyfield v Cooper and Tyson v Douglas. Probably the only two fights I've ever watched parts of with my Father.
Michael Carbajal v Humberto Gonzalez. A monumental masterpiece. Two legends, two ring announcers, two major competing promotions coming together to guarantee the first million dollar paydays at weight and just a gem of a war.
Genaro Hernandez v Raul Perez II. Still one of the classiest guys to ever take the ring hands over the title belt he just defended to the 'idol' he just beat.
Juan Manuel Marquez v Manny Pacquiao IIII. Of everything Marquez earned in the ring, he very much earned that victory.
Nigel Benn v Iran Barkley
Livingston Bramble v Oba Carr
James Toney v Vassiliy Jirov
Marco Antonio Barrera v Kennedy McKinney
Ray Mercer v Tommy Morrison
Frankie Randall v Julio C Chavez I
Jean Pascal v Badou Jack
Aaron Davis v Mark Breland
Terry Norris v Troy Waters
Bernard Hopkins v Felix Trinidad on and on and on..I'll do some lows later maybe.
Highs:
Ali-Foreman.... the upset of the century and other than Tyson-Douglas still one of the biggest of all time
Duran-Leonard I..... I was rooting for Leonard, but appreciated the fight I had just seen
Leonard-Hearns I..... another one of those classics I was happy to have seen
Gomez-Zarate..... big, bad, undefeated Zarate... conqueror of countryman Zamora and the favorite in some minds. Utter destruction.
Rosario-Bramble..... never saw it coming. Thought Bramble was going to be too strong and durable.
Tszyu-Judah..... never liked Judah at that time, and thoroughly enjoyed the chicken dance.
Trinidad-Vargas..... still my all-time favorite fight. Lost my voice for 3 days from yelling in celebration.
Mosley-Margarito..... bounced around a hotel room where I was watching the fight. Double happy to see when Cheato was exposed.
Manny-Margarito..... karma
Cotto-Margarito II...... wanted a KO, but settled for the stoppage and "drop dead" stare at the end.
Trinidad-Joppy...... wasn't quite convinced Trinidad could beat a middleweight champion in his first fight at MW. Was pleasantly surprised.
Lows:
Duran-De Jesus III...... Esteban had already beaten Duran once and had that vaunted left hook he had floored Duran with. Later on Duran would say Esteban was his toughest and paid his respects. Beat Esteban by TKO that day, though.
Hopkins-Trinidad...... my coming down to earth moment.
Cotto-Margarito I...... always wondered how Cotto's face was so broken up in a fight he was winning until the 6th round. Got my answer in the Margarito-Mosley fight.
Pryor-Arguello I and II...... Arguello was one of my favorites, although he had beaten local champ Alfredo Escalera in a brutal fight.
Holmes-Ali...... never liked Holmes, and couldn't believe they had let Ali get in the ring again.
Floyd-Manny...... I expected SO much more from that fight....
Sure I'm forgetting many highs and lows..... will add as I remember them.
High
Tyson becoming youngest heavyweight champion of the world.
Benn beating G Man – where I actually was jumping for joy at the turnaround from the disastrous 1st round. Real life Rocky fight.
Eric Morales v Barrera 1, was about 5am stayed up all night but that fight woke me up and buzzing. I wanted Morales to win but MAB was amazing, that night.
AJ v Wlad got me excited again just like watching Holyfield v Bowe again.
Watching Tyson, Roy Jones, Holyfield (Cruiserweight), Chavez, Sweat Pea, Manny Pac, Loma in their primes.
Low
Herol Graham getting stopped by Frank Grant and knew it was the end of the brilliant and elusive boxer. That he would never be able to show that he would have beaten Benn and Eubank.
Tyson being stopped by Lennox Lewis, my idol beaten.
Floyd conning people that into thinking that he was ATG
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
