    Default Shadowboxing with gloves..

What are peoples thoughts on shadowboxing with gloves on... pros? cons?

I was just thinking, instead of using hand weights to use maybe 18 oz gloves. I know 18 oz's is just above a pound and most ppl that chose to shadow box with weights probably use 2-3 lbs.

But I was thinking that there might be a few benefits of shadowboxing with heavier gloves rather than weights, if you chose to shadow box with anything at all.

It'll still help condition your arms, and at the same time you can stay relaxed and really work throwing your shots out and clenching your fist before contact... where as with weights, your're really going to be getting into the habit of clenching your fist while moving around.

Over time, depending on how often you shadowbox with weights you might come to point where it becomes so ingrained into your muscle memory that you keep a tight fist even while having gloves on.. leading to more telegraphed punches and unnecessary energy being wasted doing it.

I dont know, maybe I'm completely wrong, but I just figured, you u really wanna put weight on your arms while shadow boxing, why not do it in the form of gloves, and keep it as close to the real thing as possible.

Nothing wrong with Shadowboxing with gloves considering that is what you'll use to fight...

Having a good workout program (non boxing skills related) that includes weights will improve your strength.. Try quick controlled punches with dumbells while laying on a bench...

The problem with holding weights or weighting your hands while shadowboxing is that the weights and gravity are pulling your arms down, which is not really a natural resistance for punching..

You CAN use weights in your hands and punch slowly keeping your hands up to improve endurance of keeping your hands up... But I would keep weights seperate to strict shadowboxing for working on skills...

The best way to strengthen punches is through perfect form, weight distribution, rhythm, rotation, balance etc... Then use other weight training techniques, explosive pushups etc to work the overall strength of your arms, shoulders, core..... Adding to much weight to hands while shadowboxing will probably result in you pulling a tendon/muscle that is purely working to keep the weight from getting pulled to the floor or slowing down the forward momentum of the weight..

But yeah, if it's purely to improve endurance of keeping arms up, i'd go easy with it and just work till your arms are sore and then persist with keeping your hands high while throwing (slowly)...

Yea I know... shadowboxing with weights doesnt really make too much sense... to me atleast.

The only possible benefit I see as you mentioned as well, is conditioning your arms to keep em up throughout a fight, thats why I figured, use gloves while shadowboxing instead of weights (for those that are obsessed with the idea of doing so).

I never thought about using weight while laying on a bench and throwing out shots... might try that one out

For strength conditioning, I usually just use methods like laying down and tossing a medicine balll up in the air and catching it over and over again, annd clap push-ups etc.

I guess to truly benefit off your advice, I'll have to learn to speak Scrap.

... so what did you say I should do with the pipe? hold it in one hand and throw out shots with it?

    Scrap, you have endless ideas.

I have problems visualizing your ideas...

maybe one day I'll visit you if I'm ever on your side of the world and see all these theories in practice.

Exercise Balls - NEW- Thera-BandŽ Pro Series SCP Exercise Ball by Thera-Band

Just the elastics and what to do with em and all that, is where I get lost.

It's ok, I truly appreciate the effort though.
