    Default Julio Cesar Chavez

i just realized he's up for eligibility to be inducted in the HOF next year, seeing how he's been retired for 5 years now, so what do you guys think his chances are that he'll be the leader of the pack for next year?

IMO it's pretty obvious he'll be inducted as soon as he was retired for the 5 yrs

no doubt HOF worthy but there are other guys who also are in the running, for instance Mike Tyson, they're not gonna induct both the same year and risk losing revenue lol

He's a HOFer. And I'm not a fan. I consider Sweet Pea the best boxer (of similar size) of that era and I think Chavez, more than anyone else, epitomized the fighter who dodged tough opponants.

But a HOFer he still is.

I'm a great Chavez fan ....... he is a shoo-in for the hall of Fame, no question.

Possibly the greatest Mexican fighter ever (and that is a high compliment indeed)

If you wanted to create an imaginary composite fighter, formned of all the best bits from other boxers - I think he would have Chavez's left hook to the liver!

One of my favourite fighters ever, just loved his style and amazing to watch. Brilliant fighter who just seemed to torture his opponents and break them up. Great to watch.

for that person who said julio cesar chavez "dodged" tough opponents, you must not have looked at his overall record and accomplishments to say something ignorant like that. for one, he set records that probably aren't going to be broken anytime soon.

    a. 107-6-2 86 KO's
    b. fought for 26 years, 7 months as a pro
    c. total of 27 successful title defenses (all-time record)
    d. 23 successful title defenses before first loss
    e. 31-4-2 record in world title fights - 37 fights (all-time record)
    f. 89-0-1 75 KO's before losing first fight
    g. 3 time division champion before losing first fight
    h. 9 years as a world champion before losing first fight (9/13/84-1/29/94_
    i. 16 successful title defenses at jr. welterweight champion (all-time record)
    j. Fought 21 bouts with 16 world champions (15-4-2)
    k. Never "cherry-picked" his fights or go for paper world champions as a world title challenger

oh, and his opposition wasn't bad either:

Ruben Castillo, Roger Mayweather X 2, Rocky Lockridge, Juan La Porte, Edwin Rosario,
Rafael "Bazooka" Limon, Jose Luis Ramirez, Meldrick Taylor X 2, Hector Camacho, Greg Haugen,
Pernell Whitaker, Frankie Randall X 3, Tony Lopez, Oscar de la Hoya X 2, Joey Gamache,
Kostya Tszyu, David Kamau, Mario Martinez.

With the exception of Bazooka Limon, Jose Luis Ramirez, and Ruben Castillo, NONE of his opponents were past their prime. And only Jose Luis Ramirez was a world title fight. The other two were non-title fights.

It's safe to say Julio Cesar Chavez was one of the greatest fighters of all time. I challenge anyone to name me a fighter alive today, who can match his accomplishments.

With the exception of Jose Luis Ramirez, Ruben Castillo and Jose Luis Ramrez, he fought opponents younger than him and with zero catchweight fights.

There's no question JCC is a HoF fighter, but it will be interesting to see who gets in first between him and Tyson (if they don't induct them both).

I know that JCC and Tyson etc. etc. will get in there soon...

However I would like for the HoF to take the time and each year start brining in these ATG Asian fighters who are overlooked year after year.
They did great this year with inducting "Hawk" Chang but they are lacking major shit cuz year after year these Asian greats are overlooked.

Chitlada & Moon not in. Galaxy only Khaosai (Just my personal opinion but I don't think Khaokor belongs in the hall)
There are only 5 Asian fighters in the hall.
Galaxy, Harada, Villa, Elorde & Chang.

Yes there certainly is a bias against Asian fighters from that.

there are currently 41 mexcian/mexican-american fighters in either the IBHOF and WBHOF. there are 16 in the IBHOF and 39 in the WBHOF.

in the next few years, either one of these HOFs will welcome:

    julio cesar chavez
    oscar de la hoya
    erik morales
    marco antonio barrera
    juan manuel marquez
    johnny tapia
    fernando montiel
    israel vazquez
    rafael marquez
    jose luis castillo

and hope the following fighters can get some consideration:

    gilberto roman
    miguel angel gonzalez
    manuel medina
    paulie ayala
    jorge arce
    oscar larios
and ulises solis (if he can win another title and win some more big fights

there certainly should be more asian fighters in the HOF but let's face it, there aren't very many GREAT asian fighters from yesterday. the aforementioned asian fighters should be in but other than that, right now there aren't very many candidates. in the future, manny pacquiao, wonjongkam, luisito espinosa, hasegawa, will get there and possibly nonito donaire, if he can quit fighting minimumweights and man up and fight fighters that will give him a real fight.
