    Default Alternative to running?

I have 7 weeks till my next bout and the old shin splints are starting to come back. I know what I have to do to improve them. Inserts, compression socks and tape ect. But funds are a bit low and all that isnt cheap. I know how important roadwork is but its definatly running causing the problem. Is there anything else that is as affective for boxing as roadwork is?? Any help would be appreciated

If I was in your place I'd try power walking. I do it every once in a while as a change of pace and it has its benefits. On another note, I'd go to a doctor about the shin splits, never a good idea to train when a certain part of your body is in pain.

Not sure but may be a cross trainer as it's relatively low impact compared to pounding the streets.

If you got a place to do some swimming? In the summer I hit the local lake with a pair of fins. Works the legs and the core like a mother. Then when winter hits I join a local gym that has an indoor heated pool.

If you have proper freestyle technique it really challenges your endurance and cardio, plus it's low impact.

Big Skinny87 has a great solution. Even if you cant swim, get a float, or half 'boggie' board in front to keep your head up, and use those legs to propel you back and forth in that pool. Swimming is a great workout overall and can especially be used for leg development. Even trying to run in shallow water (up to your waist) is a hard exercise.

i never had shin splints but i do have a prob with my knees.i try and work a lot of circuit training into my routine now,but i do it using the tabata approach(google it if you dont know it).everything from bodyweight squats to burpees, skipping to cycling.its dynamite for cardio.i never run long distances now,i only use sprints, again using tabata, and im telling you its a killer.

    Guys,.
I always recommend elliptical to my clients who are run who need to take a break from the impact. It is a great workout and you can do intervals and change up the resistance to in order to make it more difficult.

Have you tried going to a running store that specializes in shoe fitting? I was plagued by shin splints my whole life until a friend recommended I go to a store like that. They watched me run on a special mat and tried various shoes until they liked what they saw. I bought the shoes and have been running shin-splint free for the past 4 years or so. Worked for me and it's been a life-changer as far as running without pain is concerned. I hope you're able to see the same success I did. Good luck!

Swimming or biking. Biking might still hurt them but its worth a try.

I had the same problem before and I started going swimming...also I practice punching under water to try to develope some hand speed. Cruiser
