Give it a week and you won't notice the bumps and the position will feel comfortable. Trust me everyone thinks that when they first ride a proper road bike.

The seat is so sharp that if you do not sit right you will lose your balls.

The other thing to take into consideration is the pedals as standard are made for special shoes that clip in to them which makes them even more faster and are efficient. I did not buy them and they hurt my feet through my work shoes.

I fell off my bike going down the subway which was slippy from the rain and leaves. Knee is bruised and I was in extreme pain. Lucky it was the old bike.

It has been raining the last 3 days so have been on the old bike as it has mudguards but it is comfortable, safe and still fast. If I crashed on the racing bike I think the wheels would have buckled.

I crashed into an old pedestrian today going to work. He did not see me at the crossing light and walked out on me, I had no time to even brake. I hit my jaw on his head, bruised my hip, shoulder and elbow. The front wheel has buckled. The old man was taken to hospital for precautionary reasons and he was in tears.

    Still went in for work.

Probably need a durable mountain bike in case of snow.
Did not realise there are different types of gears and brakes but will aim for twist gear and disk brakes.
Have to get accessories such as locks, helmet, and lights.
Biggest fear is getting run over by a car and sweating a lot when I get to work.
I have no experience of this, any advice and support appreciated on other things I need to consider.
If you are going to get a bike get a good one. Go to a bike shop, tell them what you want it for, let them help you out with a good fit, size wise. If you are going to ride in the rain get a bike with fenders which probably eliminates mountain bikes, wide (fat) tires are best for rain, a five speed would be best, a behind the seat rack or a front basket is a must for a commuter.
I have zero experience riding in the snow which is another good reason to buy from a bike shop, they will be able to give you good advice. Weight is important, the lighter the bike is the more expensive the bike is and it can get into the thousands of dollars.
Summary. What I think you should get is a sturdy five speed with big tires, fenders, bike rack, and decent components (brakes, derailleur, wheels, tires, seat, etc.). If you don't have to carry your bike (up stairs or lift it into a storage rack) don't worry about the weight, of course, you don't want to wind up pushing a 40 pound monster with a flat tire up a hill either.
Lights and reflectors. It's as important to be seen as it is to see. Get advice from your bike shop for lights, locks, helmets and riding gear, the equipment is endless.
Sweating. If you ride in the cold, rain, or snow you will wind up sweaty. You have to stay warm and all that heat you generate riding is going to be trapped inside those warm clothes, unless you want to take a long slow ride in the cold, rain, or snow , which doesn't make a lot of sense. Riding in warm weather with light clothes on helps you stay nice and cool, you sweat, the wind you generate by riding evaporates the sweat and you stay cool.
If you buy from a bike shop they usually throw in some free tune ups too. Yes I recommend bike shops, they save you a lot of money in the long run.
    Good luck!
A bonus, I have bad knees and walk with a cane, but I can ride all day long. Pushing pedals puts a totally different strain on the knees than walking does.

Had my bike stolen today. I had 3 locks on the Bike and the scallywags still took it. I just put a new chain on it last week. Had to walk home 5 miles. Pissed off.

Do not know whether to get another one now as that will get nicked.

Will report it to the police tomorrow, it has been security marked.

Everytime I saw someone ride past me I am sure I see my bike.
