Default Getting knocked down and the best way to do it

I have watched thousands of fights and I would say I have probably seen a handful of fighters who get hit with a big shot (to the head not the body) who take a knee to recover. To me this would give you 8-12 seconds (depending on ref, netrual corner etc) to recover after which you could continue to attempt to grab etc.

Is it a case of pride? not wanting to lose points(although surely this is better than a ko) or something else? Also if its not a three knowndown fight why not take a knee then another not long after if its near the end of a round? Again there might be a reason fighters dont - but aside from the fact that they are fighters I cant really think of to many!

    thoughts?

ha but what I mean is why do more guys not go down to recover after a big shot rather than getting caught over again and either being properly knocked down or stopped

I think it's pride first then the other reasons you mentioned. Taking a knee would definitely benefit guys in a lot of fights and it would be a smart move. I can't think of any examples right now of a fighter taking a knee and then winning the fight.

I believe the pride thing is exactly right, the two cases that come to mind immediately are Judah vs. Cotto and Cotto vs. Margarito.

In both cases it was clear that the ones taking a knees were beaten both mentally and physically. As hands of stone stated, I can't think of a single case where someone has taken a knee and got back to win.

I think a lot of fighters probably don't think about it.

You've just had your brain scrambled, I'm sure it seems like everything is happening at light speed, and you're not thinking clearly (if at all). I imagine that your instinct would be to grab on or back away, not drop to your knees in a more vulnerable position.

I agree after getting hit with a big shot to the head the fighter is hurt and most likely not thinking straight

I think you guys put a finger on a good portion of it, it def seems a instinctual reaction, almost a panicky survival instinct or something. There has been many who have seemed 'clear' headed that have taken a knee for God knows what. To break momentum, just green and confused etc. Rafael Ruelas vs Quiroz 1 comes to mind as a default. Ruelas was as clear as a bell, not hurt and took knee only to have his corner blow the count and he was ruled a "ko" loser. Weird shit.

This one sticks. Most dramatic case of a guy almost 'giving it up' only to come back for win. Some would have waved it off because of back turn but he did take knee. Its really all subjective I spose. Gotta trust Smoger

Maybe fighters just get caught in that mentality of keeping thier poker face on to the point where taking a knee is completely counter-intuative.?
I mean I imagine that emotionally, a fighter is hardwired to take something and give nothing. Can you ever imagine BHop taking a knee? Playing possum maybe, but taking a knee at any juncture of a fight goes against everything a fighter like BHop fights for.
