Default England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

All make up what is known as the United Kingdom, (UK) so if you grew up and have lived primarily in Scotland, Wales, or N. Ireland would you take exception to being called English/British?

Yes the Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish are fiercely patriotic and would rightly be offended as being described as English. Just as you are proud to be a Texan but also American, but would probably not liked to be refered to as Californian but times a hundred in the case of the Welsh and Northern Irish and times a million for the Scottish.

As an Englishman I totally agree with and understand their inferiority complex.:-P

Great Britain applies to England, Scotland and Wales so that makes us all British.

Uk includes Northern Ireland. (united kingdom of GB and NI).

but yeah referring to the welsh, Scottish or Irish as english would be offensive to them and rightfully so.

Maybe this is a dumb question but when was the last time your PM was not English? or when was the last time the PM was from Scotland, Wales and North Ireland?

I doubt if anyone would confuse me with being from California, but since i'm from Texas, which is part of the Southern U.S. I might take exception at being called a "Yankee" (someone from the North or North-East U.S.
I can understand the Northern Irish taking exception to being called English/British, but I never realized someone from Wales or Scotland would.

    cheers

Yes Mars, I'm Welsh but when we go to War we are all British, and we fight and stick together, then after we call each other names.

A lot of the Welsh & Scottish have a deep routed hatred for the English, they definitely wouldn't like being called English.

I'll always remember being on a lads holiday in Ibiza. We spent the entire week with some lad from Scotland we'd made friends with in our hotel (named Fran, with ginger hair & freckles! Honestly!) All week he was our best mate, then on the last night I'm walking back to the hotel with him when we bump into some Welsh girl. As if I weren't even there they both discussed in depth how much they truly hated the English.

My Dad went to the Italia '90 World Cup and when the Scottish were knocked out the competition they then fiercely supported any team who was playing against England. Even supported Ze Germans, who are traditionally the enemy of The British/Scots.

I don't understand it TBH. You can point to history but if that's the case then why do the (majority of) Americans love the English? Personally I'm British first, English second. If I was called up to fight in a war I'd be fighting side by side with The Scots & Welsh. Fine by me...

Thanks. Safe to say that one has never come from Northern Ireland?
