Default Want to start boxing but not sure if I'm too old

Im 31 almost 32 but I have always loved boxing. I have just gotten to a place in my life where I am able to pursue boxing maybe not on a career level but at least on an armature level.
I am trying to find out if I have waited too long to start, since I am pretty out of shape. I have done some martial arts and have been in law enforcement in the past.
If I'm not too late in this venture where do I start? I have found a couple local gyms but have not been in them yet.
Any comments or advice would be greatly accepted.

Im 6' with a fairly large chest, I weigh in around 245-250 is there a good weight range I should be shooting for?
Already found a local gym and trying to work their hours around mine.
This is so going to be worth the wait!!!

I shouldn't worry about competing or weight ranges just yet. Just get yourself in to the gym and see how you like the training and sparring - some gyms throw you straight in others wait till you've actually got some skills to defend yourself! Good luck.

Ok cool, glad to know about weight.
Just found out the gym I want to go to had a decent fire not long ago so I gotta wait another 2weeks or so for them to reopen.

We have a boxer who started his first lesson at age 37. He has turned out to be an exceptional person in not only doing the warm up, strength routines and exercises, but he is fast and tough. He is now age 40 and loves to spar with amateur boxers. We use him as a mentor, a trainer, and to show others---age is a state of mind.
You don't have to fight amateur or pro. If you love boxing, get in the ring and do body shots or short fights. If you have a physical reason for not taking hard shots...let your partner know.
I am age 69, and I still occasionally climb into the ring for a few rounds. I can't take the hard hits anymore, but I love showing young boxers steps and moves most young trainers have never seen. It keeps me alive and it keeps boxing alive.
Most important, any doctor will tell you that I am healthy as a race horse, and they wish their patients would take up the diet and exercise of a boxer.

You are certainly not too old. I started at 41 and am now 44. I train and spar with the competing amateurs in my gym. When I'm in the gym I forget about the 20-30 year age difference and the other boxers think nothing of my age. Make sure that you are in good physical condition before starting training in your boxing gym e.g. make sure that you can do around 50 repetitions of push-ups, squat thrusts, 'knees-to-chest', squats, lunges and around 100 sit-ups. In our gym we would often do something like this at the end of a session involving around 3-4 rounds of sparring and a few rounds of pads and bag work.
