Exclamation Mayweather Tops List Of The World's 100 Highest-Paid Athletes

A bit old (June 2012 but here you go)

Mayweather Tops List Of The World's 100 Highest-Paid Athletes - Forbes

There’s a reason they call boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. “Money.” He fought twice during the past 12 months, knocking out Victor Ortiz in September and winning a unanimous decision in May against Miguel Cotto. He spent less than one hour in the ring to dispatch his two foes.

His combined payday for the bouts: $85 million.

That helped make Mayweather the world’s highest-paid athlete over the past year, unseating Tiger Woods, who has been the top-earner since 2001. Woods ranks third this year with earnings of $59.4 million.

Mayweather maximizes his earnings by also acting as his own fight promoter through his company Mayweather Promotions. He collects all of the revenue from tickets, pay-per-view and sponsorships and covers the costs, including the purse for his opponent. His take home per fight is typically at least 50% higher than what his rival Manny Pacquiao earns.

Being a wildly polarizing figure doesn’t seem to have hurt his earnings. He charmed old ladies as a contestant on Dancing with the Stars in 2007 and provoked outrage with his racially charged, hate-filled rant against Pacquiao in 2010. His antics create buzz, and the result is both boxing fans and people who are normally indifferent to the sport pay up for his bouts. He has been a part of the four biggest non-heavyweight PPV events in boxing’s history. The Cotto fight generated $94 million in PPV receipts.

Mayweather is a dick but he's the greatest boxer to come along in a long time. Maybe the best of all time.

When I first head about this I sort of figured it wasn't including sponsors, but thinking more I'd imagine it wouldn't matter. 85 million in one year is incredible for any athlete to have made, and to think it was just for the 2 fights.

I wonder if that's as much as any athlete in history has made over 12 months My guess would be maybe a Michael Shumacer or Tiger Woods would have topped it slightly in years past, but then you think about the number of events they actually partake in and how much they would have to travel etc. Mayweather's made that for less than an hours work without leaving town, pretty insane.

He's one hell of a fighter! As someone said, he deserve every penny!
Alot of rumors goin on lately about 50 and Floyd.
Or is it 50 and ms jacksson nowadays?

I'm not personally a fan of Floyd, he's attitude and how he acted up against the judge!
The whole money team is fishy!

    Cheers

I have heard that 50 cents has parted with Floyd as he did not put his end of the money up. They may not be best friends any longer.

Floyd Mayweather doesn't deserve every penny. For fighting Ortiz? For figting Cotto half a decade past his sell by date? Floyd is canny, but he isn't value for money in the slightest. I hope he ends up like Holyfield. That would teach him for conning the public into these stupid fights. KO by sucker punch? Pathetic. He should have had his pay docked for that nonsense.

My hating has never enriched Mayweather and sucker punches are poor value for money. Most sensible people would agree, Mayweather is looking somewhat ring worn now too. The Cotto fight was actually very close and Mayweather looked for the easy way out against Ortiz.

He isn't looking all that great at all these days.

I do hate Floyd but you have to admire his skills. He took Cotto on at his weight with no catch weight so he gets my respect for that performance.

I kind of agree with you but you forogt all the positive things he bring to boxing!

For example, Just bein the number one paid athletic gives boxing millions of viewers.
I'm not a fan as I said earlier but Floyd might get the same reputation as sugar ray Leonard...
Man i get alot of haters on me now, but for real nobody really knows!

    Regards. Xweetie
