No, it should not become extinct. When push comes to shove, young people know how to punctuate and I say this from the perpective of one who is currently going through the process of grading hundreds of exam papers. When it comes to texting, people are bound to not bother with and I somewhat agree as I have no inclination to become cellular literate myself either. When using a cell phone to post it was even thrown at me that my inability to punctuate sufficiently was a sign of some mental collapse. Needless to say, it was nothing so grand nor dramatic, but simply the act of posting on a smart device that tends to make people look less than smart. As can be seen here, I am brilliant and shall always be brilliant.
The apostrophe is something that is needed and when it comes to schooling and examinations it should never be neglected and thus far it doesn't seem to be. The kid'ses are al'right y'all!
