Good question and it's an intriguing matchup. Kovalez is a buzzsaw and im very high on him but for now, Id pick Ward by decision.

As much as I hate to admit cuz he bores the shit out of me, Ward has a complete game, inside and out.. He can pick you apart from the outside, or maul your ass on the inside.. IT's a lethal combination to have.

Ward I feel would outbox Kovalev, a safety FIRST type of fight for Ward as we have seen
you stand in front of Kovalev, he WILL poleaxe you.!
But with Kovalev's punch power, and his boxing ability he could just spark Ward,! very
    interesting fight this one.

I love Kovalev, but all his power would be gone once he started being hit just when he is ready to throw.
It is a big question how he will react to consistent misses and tap punches. Mathisse for instance was throwing nice sharp crispy punches for 2-3 rounds with Garcia, but after that it was all gone and his switched to slow (still hard though) thudding punches, failing to land anything

Ward has not fought in a long time and certainly not at light heavy so knowing Ward he will get back to being active and then make a move to light heavy when he is ready. By that time he will be able to comprehensively out box Kovalev.
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
