Primitive as in early, not naive, and certainly not third rate Dan Brown conspiracy fodder. Fucking hell man (:

Thanks for sharing. Can we talk about Van Eyck next? The leading light in that group of painters?

Netherlandish altarpieces were made not just as storytelling devices, but also as a conduit for Christian's devotion. They are interesting (and you can see it in the Rogier van der Weyden above) that in order to facilitate this the characters are often dressed in contemporary dress, not that which the people depicted would have worn (have a look) and the architecture is not always ancient or middle eastern but familiar to the local worshipers. It then becomes not so much of a surprise that the crucifixion is their in the nativity scene. He wants you connect to the stories when the altar pieces are opened out on holy days. He is reminding you of the purpose of Jesus life.

I have a theory that The Annunciation is such a recurring theme in these altar pieces because they are a reminder that the wealthy patrons (it is often their patron saints on the outside of the panels) are trying to justify their own role as Lords or Kings, as though that feudal role was also bestowed upon them by Gd.

    What the absolute fuck.

Only thing I can think is he was held down as a young teen and molested whilst trying to fight off his Brooklyn street attackers, and the combo of fighting for his life in terror and getting molested at the same time reinforced that sick, twisted reaction in him. I mean he must have been repeatedly abused as a 9, 10, 11 year old when he was hanging out in the street breaking and entering and getting high with 15, 16, 17 year olds. I know the area very well where he grew up, it is beyond nasty and twisted, walked through his very neighborhood many, many times and at about 6 p.m. or so you if you're passing thru on a bus/subway connection, you yeah, probably wanna get the living fuck out of there quick. Poor guy. Still haunted. Just shows what childhood trauma can do for so, so long.

what the living FUCK stopped him from picking up rocks and throwing them like 4 minutes before the end? He was passing over prime rock territory, nice big baseball sized rocks, thousands of them. I'd have been fucking off the camera and picking up rocks and throwing them like fucking Bob Gibson.

I dunno, any knowledge I have pretty much ends at domestics . She may have fully committed if he chucked rocks close to her cubs (?!) What do you call young cougars anyway . I'd almost want to face an equal size bear. That cat was moving like Roy Jones with razor blade gloves.
