As a big fan of both bands, but if you look at it objectively Metallica has the better catalogue and the better resume. You can trace a growth and evolution with each successive Metallica album, whereas Iron Maiden drifted into redundancy more often than Maiden megafans would care to admit.

Two all time great metal bands but you have to give it to Metallica.

Without Maiden and the NWOBHM there probably would be no Metallica. Apples and Oranges really, both fruit but both quite different. The idea of any kind of music being better than another is pretty subjective really. Most people who enjoyed either of these bands would probably like the other.

Maiden, but the gallop is done now. Iron Maiden went through mythology and had an entire experience. Metallica fell off after the whole Napster thing.

I feel exactly the same way as P4Pking. Not my cup of tea at all. It would be like choosing between fish, they both smell and I'm eating neither.

Fish is a whole food group. By not partaking you are basically saying I don't like food. Its like pretending you are a punk without any understanding or love of reggae. For all their corporate foibles even the most ardent of Metallica haters would have to acknowledge their crucial role in helping to spread the word and establish Thrash. Exodus, flotsam and jetson, the whole bay area thing, anthrax etc were obviously and equally influenced by punk bands as metal and rock bands and the fact that like Maiden, Metallica were able to build a huge following and career on the strength of live performances and album sales is something to be admired. Maiden are a bit like Lord of the Rings for grown ups and Metallica really threw down the garage metal gauntlet with Kill em all. Check out 'Whiplash' Miles for an exhilarating exercises in concise brutality and joy. I swear that you can hear James Hetfields shit eating grin on the bounciness of the recording.

I don't like fish, it simply means I don't like fish. I have nothing against the consumption of lamb, chicken, or even human. It's fish that irks above all else. You cannot say 'You don't like food because of your dislike of fish' as most people avoid foods for all kinds of reasons. Human meat being a case in point. I don't think liking punk means needing reggae too. You don't hear it in the Sex Pistols. The Clash for sure and their reggae stuff is just not very interesting. Tommy Gun or Guns of Brixton? Tommy Gun every time. Punk is punk. It's evolution meant that punk artists become more than punk artists. It typically led to band breakups.

Metallica are a band I have really never enjoyed. In fact it irks me that they were Lou Reed's last sparring partner. I love Lulu, and few would ever agree with that, but it is great despite Metallica. Maybe Lou needed sales knowing he was sick, the lyrics on the album tell us all he was sicktoo, but it was an odd collabaration.

If you can't hear Reggae in the work of John Lydon then you are obviously a bit musically retarded or culturally snobbish. The Pistols were always much more of a Rock band than a punk band anyway.

The Pistols and Public Image were very different, granted. Again, just another band out of most who did not move on reggae.

Whiplash was a fuck of an introduction, wasn't it?
