    Default water filter

Can anyone recommend a good efficient water filter? I spend hundreds of pounds on a fancy one connected to the sink with its own tap but the filters were expensive and had to be replaced every six months.

I want a jug type with cheap filter replacement that works. Our water has a lot of chemicals and I am thirsty.

Mate you are going to love me.

Get your self a bench one that has changeable plastic filters that go into the top of the jug.
You buy a pack of four or two they last for about a 100 litres.

Heres the thing theres some slits in the cap so once there done after a month or so you can loosen the cap off by prying one off you then have on the inside a light synthetic filter pad under it about three tablespoons of activated carbon then on the bottom another piece of cloth.

Go to a pet shop, get a bag of filter wool,(used for fish tanks) and get a bag of activated carbon.

Every month you empty it out and put a touch of wool on the bottom. Get out some carbon its in little chunks, and you put it in a sieve and wash it under the hot tap and move it around with the spoon to remove any dust, spoon it in until its just down from the top of the cap, then turn the cap upside down and fill that with some filter wool and if you've been careful removing the cap it will snap back into the the top of the removable filter,Do that every month save us a fortune.

Only thing it doesnt remove is fluoride that requires a smaller holed filter and another process only a few of the under sink ones come with.
Cheaper under sink ones mostly have a carbon and wool style filter that you have to replace at a considerable cost.If you get one of those just empty and refill it the same way.

15 dollars buys you enough carbon and wool to last about 10 years its very cheap in pet shops cause tanks use a fair bit to keep freshwater fish alive in pure water.

I think mines a Steffani but it fits brita filters too. Most makes are similar just have different styles of filters that slip into the top section.

mine is this one, About 25 bucks,12 pounds for the whole unit including two filters.

If you want to take out all chemicals I think you have to have an under bench ceramic filter or better still reverse osmosis type.

Yeah we used to boil it but really the water isnt germy at all and boiling doesnt get rid of fluoride ,I used to think it did a bit, but I think maybe only a touch of chlorine may go in boiling it.
We have an instant gas hot water service so for hot water it isnt instant and you get between the tap and the hot water service cold water laying in the pipes that first runs out for a minute before it gets hot,so I run that cold water into spare jugs instead of down the sink, then use that through the day to filter for drinking, also use the filtered stuff for in the kettle too.
