It's such a tough one. Obviously I am a sucker for melody, so McCartney does it for me more these days. It used to be the opposite. In no particular order today I would say:
1. Yesterday (timeless melody, could have been written any time)
2. Your Mother Should Know (this one is maybe less popular, but I love it)
3. And your bird can sing (great guitar sounds and harmonies)
4. Here, there and everywhere (McCartney is not human)
5. A day in the life (Just transcendent)
6. Honey Pie (McCartney magic)
7. Nowhere Man (really deep lyrics in this one)
8. Strawberry Fields Forever (lovely verse melody)
9. Eleanor Rigby (Great use of strings)
10. Golden Slumbers (Just a really beautiful piece)
I actually find Help to be a pretty dull album and you can tell they were doing it as a hack. I think the same about Beatles for Sale and a few others. A few good tracks, but not great albums at all. When they took more time and worked at it in the studio the music became profound and magical and those 1966 onwards albums are where it gets truly special for me. I think Pepper is a little bit overrated though. Better songwriting on Revolver and more sporadically on The White Album and Abbey Road.
