    "A Tough Test For Earnie"

    Earnie Shavers {Age; 26 years, 11 months} was to have his toughest test yet as
    a Professional.

    The 6' 0" 205 lb. bomber, had a record of 39-2-0 {39 KO's}. The Fight Promoters
    listed Earnie with having a record of 42-2-0 {42 KO's} and with running a
    Knockout Streak of '25'.

    Despite the impressive 'KO Record', the Boxing Pundits were not completely
    convinced with Earnie's talents, as he was not listed in the World Top 10 ratings.

    Vicente Rondon {Age; 34 years, 0 months} was the former WBA Light-Heavyweight
    Champion {as early as April 7, 1972} only 4 1/2 months earlier.

    The Venezuelan brought in a record of 37-7-1 with {21 KO's}. But the 6' 3" tall banger
    had lost '2' straight by Knockout.
    * April 7, 1972 ...... L KO 2 > Bob Foster
    * July 10, 1972 ..... L KO 2 > Ron Lyle

    Still, the Boxing Pundits were convinced that Vicente could give Earnie all sorts of trouble,
    if he could get by the first 2-Rounds and avoid Earnie's big right-hand.

    Overview Analysis

    Earnie {205 lbs.} had the natural size over Vicente {191 lbs.}.

    But Vicente had the height {6' 3"} over Earnie {6' 0 1/2"}.

    Earnie came out clubbing, and looked to drop his right-hand bomb
    on the 34 year-old Venezuelan.

    But Vicente was a bit too crafty, and rolled with the heavy-punches that
    Earnie threw.

    Earnie constantly moved Vicente to the Ropes during the first-half of
    the bout, where he slammed away.

    But Vicente came off the Ropes, and became more aggressive during the
    middle Rounds.

    Earnie returned to his aggressive ways, and scored with a late-rally to secure
    the win.

    This was not as easy a bout as the Scorecards indicated. This was a grueling
    bout that Vicente made interesting during the middle Rounds.

    Scorecards
    * 100-90 ...... 10-0-0 > in Rounds
    * 99-94 ........ 6-1-3 > in Rounds
    * 99-92 ........ 8-1-1 > in Rounds

    Ron Lyle

    I came in to Canton, Ohio to watch the Earnie Shavers bout with
    Vicente Rondon.

    We were scouting Earnie for a possible bout in October 1972.

    I had KO'd Vicente in '2-Rounds' only 1-Month earlier, and I wanted to
    see if Earnie could better me.

    Earnie was done after 3-Rounds, and he labored after that. He was not
    impressive at all.

    I wanted to fight Earnie right away after I saw that bout. But his Manager
    wouldn't agree to it.

    So Lyle admits he was looking for an easy fight and Shavers was protected. Some things in boxing never change.

    I don't think Ron was looking for an easy fight.

    I think they were 'scouting' Earnie, as there was a possibility that they
    were in for a possible bout together for October 1972.

    All boxers look for an easy fight for the most money and if they can beat/expose a name then that is a bonus.

    Rondon

    36-71 (Bummy beyond all measure. There will probably never be a record again as bummy as that)
    191lbs (Cruiserweight)
    21 KO's in 107 fights. We are talking about one of the most punch weak boxers of all time! About 18%, basically non-existent punch.

    What more can be said..

    Cherry Picker, cruiser crincher, bum buster Shavers.

    And the all mighty Shavers FAILED to KO this guy. That is the saddest part of the story, despite all.

    This HAS to be some sort of joke! No way can you guys be this stupid unless your having a bit of fun.

    Yes, and we all know how that breaks down once we separate bums and cruisers don't we.

    You might say that Earnies resume quickly evaporates!

    They were heavyweights. What do you expect him to do?

    Go into a time machine and fight today's fighters?

    I don't expect anything more or less.

    Earnie was a great opponent in his day.

    But he simply was what he was.

    What I do expect is for him to shut his mouth and stop running it with dribble, self glorifying his own career at the expense of obviously much better boxers.
