Are you sure, Master? What about Billy Walker back in the 1960's? I might be wrong, but I thought he was the first guy to earn a million without ever fighting for the world title?
Billy never fought for any title, not sure of his earnings out of 20 odd fights, could have been a million but who knows. Lovely bloke , sold his house, near me, to ernie wise and went to Jersey. Missed in the pineapple billy.

Tyson isn't the only bite fighter.

    1980
Nick Ortiz 21-6 vs Steve Delgado 13-3-1

    NABF super welterweight title
Referee, called the bout at 1 minute of the 5th round; Ortiz had been warned about biting, but had continued to do so. The Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended Ortiz after getting DQ'd

Ring magazine 1980 stated: Ortiz next fight was with a Milton Owens 26-1 in a clinch, Owen bit Ortiz. Ortiz bit him back- but the ref let the fight continue. The best biter won Milton Owens

    Searching the internet for this:

    Per Ring 1980

2 Lawyers settle dispute in ring over court case gone bad.

Boyd Waggoner age 44 challenged Gerald Banks age 39 to settle a court case gone bad.
all state boxing club in Texas set the stage for 3 one minute rounds.

The balif and a few others agreed to be the time keeper, ref and judge
Waggoner spanked in the first round, but Banks came hard in the second round.

By the 3rd round witnesses said both were too tired to do anything in the 3rd but clinch.
It was ruled a draw. neither complained of the decision.

Anyone can find something on this -here is the place to put it! THX!

Most people think Dempsey refused to fight black fighters.

It was his trainer's decision, manager and promoter Tex Rickard.

Still reeling from the violence that erupted across the country when Jack Johnson won the HW title, he stated whites still wasn't ready to accept a black man as HW champ.

Before Jack Johnson passed he revealed that he wouldn't fight other black fighters because the country didn't want to see a fight where no white was fighting for the HW title.

Two heavyweight champions who would not fight a black man for the HW title: Johnson and Dempsey.

I think on two different occasions he was going to fight a black. I forgot with whom. Langford maybe.

Rummaging through a few old Ring magazines that has stories on Tex Rickard and why he didn't let Dempsey fight other than whites. No names mentioned on who Dempsey turned down.

That's one thing great about magazines.

Perused table of contents. With the internet great stories get buried. Who wants to do a search from 71-90 only to see nothing relevant. A few pages back on this thread I mentioned two attorneys who fought each other.

Article on the table of contents led me there "Two attorneys settle out of court-in a ring"

I loved the ring magazine because of the history of boxing it taught you even if sometimes I felt is was a bit a bit too nostalgic to the old fighters.

Three unrelated fighters: Milton McCrory, Duane Thomas and Jimmy Paul all of whom would become world title holders, all lived on the same street as children.

Amazing they all lived in the same street didn't know that.

The other Lightweight champ Hilmer Kenty was Kronk's first, just beating Tommy by a few months.

I think that million was more like 100k, how time exaggerates. One of Billy Walkers famous quotes was a response to the question, who is your favourite boxer? which was - Kirk Douglas - because he made 100k dollars for the film 'champion'.

Billy was(is) a great bloke who lived in my village for a few years, sold his house to Ernie Wise, happy days.

    BUMP!

    https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/...158-story.html

President Roosevelt not only an avid fan of boxing, he boxed himself and won a few championships, albeit minor, nevertheless, he was truly a RoughRider!
After he reached the White House, Roosevelt continued his hobby of inviting sparring partners to box, a practice he started as governor of New York.
But Roosevelt met his match in what turned out to be his final bout in 1908 when an opponent landed a punch to the president's left eye. The blow caused severe hemorrhaging, eventually a detached retina, and finally blindness in the eye. He was 50 years old at the time.

He fought as a light heavyweight at Harvard in its intramural competition.
