By the notion the champion should always get more popular fighters would never get to fight for titles. Pac/Floyd/Canelo/Cotto etcetera. You can't punish both fighters because one is popular, the less popular guy makes more money than they normally would fighting a popular guy.

Does seem contradictory in this fight considering everyone doubted Wilder but I guess his impressive record brought him attention despite the level of competition
