Anybody watching the Pan Am Games?
This is a pretty deep thread. If you guys are going to start subtly slamming Canada then we first have to decipher what is and what is not a sport or we need to include such things as Equestrian, trampoline etc etc.
Other considerations might be population, a countries size, the climate, the amount of money spent and the fact that the UK is not a country.
*money is huge. If we put a fraction of the money you guys do into rowing and our athletes didnt have to have 2 part time jobs and live at home we'd do much better then we do and as it is we are usually in the top five from C-1 to the 8 man.
We dominate hockey.
We dominate Lacrosse
We are dominant in wrestling
We are dominant in MMA
We are dominant in kick boxing
We are dominant in marathon paddling
We are dominant in long track speed skating
We are dominant in short track speed skating
We are dominant in swimming
We are dominant in diving
We are dominant in table tennis
We are dominant in volleyball
Our females are dominant in soccer
I could go on but this is about boxing. Like the Jewish people our best boxers were around for the most part before WW2 and then for about ten years after. It all ended in many ways with guys like Chuvalo and Durelle.
Today we have relied on imports to be sure and if not for Quebec we'd have no boxing community. But we all rely on imports right. Where was Mo Farah from?
Nobody is going to stack up to the rich history of Britain in boxing with or without that British/Jamaican/Canadian.
If Fury beats Wlad its pretty huge on paper but when you put it all into perspective we shouldn't be deceived by it. Wlads been undefeated for what 11 years and the way he has won and those he has fought will have a lot of people saying that he finally fought a guy his size that didn't stand right in front of him. But if Fury does pull it out will people actually believe that he is the best heavyweight in the world? Its for that reason that I would put it in line with Turpin beating Robinson. A one off.
Yeah there is loads to it. But come on, he started with the insults! I happen to like Canada.
I agree that nationality can be a slippery concept to pin down. It isn't always black and white.
The UK is a country. We just have countries within our country. Unique.
Couple of things to pick up from your list though...dominant in swimming?? Tell the US or Australia? Pretty sure GB got more medals at last couple of Olympics too.
Female soccer? You have a good team. They were knocked out by England at the World Cup last month.
Table Tennis? Aren't the Chinese the dominant force there?
And you can't really compare many of the sports on your list to mine. I ignored our 3 main sports and then picked what I think are some of the most globally popular sports. You went pretty niche there.
I didn't make a comparison with darts, snooker, rowing, sailing,
I'm not trying to denigrate Canada but if Beanflicker does his insulting Britain bit (which I take in good spirits) I'm going to hit back. Of course money, pop size, climate, facilities etc are key. In fact, if you could somehow account for that across every nation then I'm sure there would be a pretty equal split word wide. With some differences due to different genetics being suited to different sports and different mentalities too.
As for Fury, I'm in agreement.

Well the build up for this fight is really good already
My question is "How disappointed will the Fury fans be once Wlad knocks him out?"
Dont worry about me
I remember back when the Haye fight was announced and there were alot more sceptics and critics of Tyson back then. Now though he is fighting the best heavy for the last ten years and there is no where near the same antogonistic rubbish being posted about how Tyson will get battered. Now either people think Haye is more dangerous or there is a nervous, unsure, constipation about the outcome of this fight. Almost as if people are going to have to eat lots and lots of crow. Which they wont of course. This forum will be like a ghost town for a week or so with tumbleweeds
El Kabong is the poster we should be most concerned about
Part of the reason Fury doesn't get the stick he did though Ross isn't because people were wrong then, but because he has since improved out of sight in my opinion.
I still don't give him much of a chance (won't write him off completely though) but a few years ago he looked shybo.

If Fury beats Wlad (convincingly).... it would probably be the best thing that could happen to boxing right about now. We all know most casual fans go as the heavyweight division goes. We also all know the division hasn't been anything to write home about since Wlad has reigned.... partly because of his opponents' timidness, and partly because of Wlad's own penchant for making fights boring and exasperating. We need people to look at the division with interest again. If Fury KO's Wlad it'll be like "WOW! Where the hell did that come from?" Then it'll be up to Wlad to either retire with the loss... or demand a rematch, resulting in the most anticipated and watched HW matchup since..... well, since the Tyson days.
From what little I've seen of Fury... I don't give him much of a chance... but I hope I'm wrong. Ross certainly seems confident his man will win. Let's see.
If fury beats Wlad fairly he will deserve it ................... wow I've just looked out of the window and seen a Gloucester Old Spot fly past !
Remember reality is an illusion caused by a lack of alcohol .
Wlad is the clear favourite here, internationally qualified monster, Olympic gold medallist, long reigning world champ, he is the finished article and we think we know everything about him.
Fury has technical deficiencies, he has struggled against some average fighters and certain,y hasn't proven himself against anybody ..... But he gives good trash talk, meh is genuinely big enough to hopefully north be bullied and intimidated, and he definitely has a fighters heart. That's why people see he might have a chance against the ageing champ.
I still think Wlad wins convincingly, but it should be fun while it lasts!
