    Default (STACKED!) Great Fight Cards!!

2011-04-09- These fights were all on the same card?!?!

    Erik Morales vs Marcos Maidana
    Robert Guerrero vs Michael Katsidis
    James Kirkland vs Nobihuro Ishida
Paulie Malinaggi vs Jose Miguel Cotto

That card was the definition of (STACKED)

    Inspired by Eric44-Haye Undercard.

I remember all of those fights

if youd have asked me now though id have said that the malinaggi cotto fight was a couple of years earlier than the other 3 fights, I don't remember them being on the same night

the morales maidana fight seems a lot more recent

On July 3, 1986, at the Olympic Auditorium, I sat in the fourth row and saw...
Roger Mayweather vs Oscar Bejines, at the height of Roger's run as the Mexican Assassin.
Azabache Martinez, after Chavez but pre getting robbed against Nelson, vs ESPN star Dana Roston.
Top featherweight contender and future champ Marcos Villasana vs Mexican featherweight champ Aristides Acevedo.
Plus under card fights and the electric atmosphere of fight night at the Olympic Auditorium.

    From the almost happened files:

    February 23, 1981
Hearns vs Benitez-to get 1.5 mil each.
    Cooney vs Norton
Eddie Mustafa Muhammad vs Matthew Saad Muhammad
    Gomez vs Ayala

    What did happen.

Promoter Harold Smith(not his real name) fled the scene at two minutes to midnight and completely dissapeared killing the card. Feds on pursuit for a Wells Fargo job.

So instead King rode in about 3 years later and on Dec 3 1983 we got

    Hearns v Benitez-pay cut 1/4 mil
    Gomez v Pintor-pay cut of 125,000

Expected about 40,000 in attendance and got 12,000

I figure that two fight package today would fill that same stadium and Hearns and Benitez would have gotten 10 mil each.

I think theres plenty of stacked cards nowadays. I think peoples standards of stacked is ridiculous though.

Bertos card this weekend is stacked for me.

Berto Ortiz - close to 50/50
Rodriguez Willaims Jr - Very good LHW fight
Montiel Lara - neither great fighters but should be good while it lasts
Washington Chambers - 2 of USs better heavies
Also have 5 or 6 other fights (al beit one sided) with decent prospects.

The bigger the main event the harder it is to stack the card because of money.

Don King put on some excellent packed cards when Tyson was otherwise engaged.

King did some top cards with SET and you didn't wince when buying them. You know you're deep when a p4p champ Lopez is carrying the 5th spot

    Klitschko vs Peter I
    BoxRec - event

Known as the undefeated Nigerian Nightmare. Legit HW title fight.
Preceded by Cotto vs Torres, great scrap.
Kendall Holt and Henry Akinwande also fought on this card.

Overall 2 KOs 2 TKOs 1 DQ & 2 decisions on this card.

    Those are good cards.

Are the cards now crap or are we just getting old?

    Good question.

    Most PPV cards aren't stacked.
    But that's just my opinion.
And with so many wannabe promotions...it waters down the card.

Looking up that one per boxrec events, I saw one particular night, Roy Jones headlined a card. Vassily Jirov on another.

Two other names I forgot. They all had dismal undercards. What a shame there is such little collaborations amongst boxing promoters. Boxers turn promoters are no better at stacking the night with great matchup.
