Default 100 years ago this week the Russian Royal Family was murdered by the Bolsheviks

Tsar Nicholas II, the Tsarina Alexandra and their five children, along with three servants and the family physician, Dr Yevgeny Botkin, were slain in cold blood in Yekaterinburg in July 1918.

The entire family of Nicholas II along with their physician and servants were shot in the basement of the Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg, Siberia. All seven of the Romanov family plus Dr. Eugene Botkin and three servants (maid Anna Demidova, cook Ivan Kharitonov, and footman Alexei Trupp) were escorted to a basement room. Chairs were brought in for Nicholas, Alexandra, and Alexei. The family believed they were being evacuated to a new location.

Eight members of the firing squad entered the basement room along with Yakov Yurovsky, the commandant of the Ipatiev House. A few minutes later Yurovsky informed the prisoners that they were about to be executed. Nicholas arose in shock but was quickly shot down. Chaos ensued as the executioners gunned down the family members and their servants.

Anastasia Romanov, holding her poodle dog Jimmy, followed the family down the steps to the terrible cellar in Yekaterinburg, where they were told to wait. Suddenly the executioners strode in. The family and their servants, arrayed against the far wall, were gunned down by about a dozen men. Anastasia, who had just turned 17, was among the last to die, according to later testimony from the Bolshevik firing squad. Nor did the killers spare her pet. They crushed the dog’s head with a rifle butt and tossed him into the truck with the dead. The bodies of the family and their retainers were disfigured, mutilated, and either burned or buried in the forest.

The Royal family ruled with fear and lived decadently so some would argue they deserved it.

Nicholas II was somewhat inept, and probably shouldn't have led Russia into WW I, but he didn't really "rule with fear". And the Romanov children never did anything wrong.

The early Bolshevik leaders Trotsky, Sverdlov, Zinoviev, Kamenev, and Lenin did rule with fear though.

And later Stalin certainly ruled with fear, more so than anybody - he was responsible for tens of millions of deaths and horrific suffering. When a Soviet general lost a battle, Stalin had him shot; even Hitler didn't do that. Very often, when someone simply disagreed with Stalin or rubbed him the wrong way, he would be executed.

The only one who killed more was Mao. Nobody beats his record
